It is true that many people today live a life aimed at realizing their individual benefit and value, yet that does not necessarily mean that benefit of society will be overlooked or harmed. In fact, as long as members of society do not go against benefits of the community, to pursue self interest often leads to contribution to social benefit at the same time.

Of course social benefits should be emphasized whether at the standpoint of individuals or of the whole country. A peace and orderly environment serves as the basis for productive activity of people living in this society, which undoubtedly includes the pursuit of individual goal. And a country with balanced development in fields of economics, politics, arts, and education, all of these are assurance for every member to live a good life. From another point of view, such situations of a country arm it with competitive forces when it develops along with numbers of other nations in the new century. But what could contribute to such competitive forces, to such peaceful and ordered environment of a country? Only people of that country can do, who are the most valuable belongings of a society, and the only source of development. Having recognized such importance of human resources, one should put considerations of the social benefits at the first place.

Yet consideration of social benefits does not necessarily entail one to ignore his own interests, for the two do not contradict each other. First, since a society is made up of individual members, social benefits are made up of individual interests, in which every member have his occupation. If everyone is able to make effort to improve his life, the whole level of a country will be enhanced. And in many cases, one makes great work that may contribute to the society greatly in the meantime of realizing his own value. For example, many scientists are doing research simply because of their own interest and curiosity about the world, yet the result may be transformed into productivity and make people live a better life.

The second reason that one should pursue his own benefit is that such pursuit is often the necessary embodiment of a large pursuit for social benefits. The latter is so complex and expansive a concept that it is vague in requirement of efforts aimed at contributing to it. How to make contributions to construction of our city? It is hard to think out a clear answer that will certainly lead to such result, but instead, one could choose to be a worker, a doctor, or an engineer. Let’s assume that one choose to become engineer, then he must work hard to become a excellent one for doing great work to benefit the city, a goal that requires him to work hard in class for applying a good university and for accomplishing great work. Even a good reputation is needed for him to do better job, which, at the same time, is an ideal goal of his own pursuit.

To sum up, social benefits and individual benefits are related, realization of one is the premise of actualization of another. Therefore, one should consider social benefits first, and then under such premise further consider his own interest to accomplish the large goal. It is little effort of every individual combined that make a strong country, which conversely, will assure everyone to live a better life.
