In the reading passage, the author argues that reading is at a risk now because fewer than half of Americans read literary work.However, the professor in the leture is against this opnion. In his view, declining number of the readers dosen't mean our society is in danger.
   
To begin with, reading says there are fewer people reading literature, thus our society's ability to think as a whole will decline. While it's not the case to the professor. He says that many people don't read traditional literary works, they read in a different way such as scientific fiction, history story otr other nonfictions. which doesn't mean they don't read and can't develop their ability to think.
  
What's more, accroding to the reading, our cultural level of the nation will decline because of lack of interest of reading.However, the professor is against it. In his eyes, culture of our society is shifting.People are not limited by tradional ways to reading thanks to electronic mediam like cinema, radio, television ect. So we have more ways to reading and touching knowledge.Thus our culture level will boom.

At last,  the reading material says that our readingship of literature will cause English literature to be marginal. But the speaker dosen't agree with it since he concludes that it's writer circle that should be blamed for this phenomina rathar that common people. Because writers today always write some thing readers can't understand.As a result, people tend to film or pop music which they can enjoy themselves.
