11.25 The telephone has a greater effect on people's lives than the television do
When Baird invented the first telephone, he could not foresee the great benefit that telephones bring to the world. However, without question, nobody can doubt whether the television industry has achieved a big success in contemporary society. Compared with the telephone, I hold that the television influences our lives in a more positive way.

In the first place, television makes contribution to education. Not mention the most popular “Discovery Channel”, there are more and more programs covering various kinds of knowledge. For instance, it was fortunate for my cousin Dan, a boy of fourteen, to walk out of the forest all by his own on the trip he took last summer. He told me when he got lost in the forest, he felt so scared and hopeless, and suddenly all the things came to his mind were the skills he learned from his favorite program—the “Man vs. Wild”. Depending on those skills, he eventually made himself out of trouble. In this case, the education function of television cannot be ignored because it saved people’s life. Besides, for the expansion of knowledge, television is truly a good choice in that it provides vivid images and is sufficient convenient.


Though I study abroad, I never forget the great time I had with my family last year. All the family sat together and enjoyed a comedy on TV. The atmosphere was so cosy and warm. Admittedly, television brings so much pleasure to our daily lives due to the infinite entertainment it provides. This considerably enriches people’s lives and also reduces the pressure of study or work. As for me, I always feel relaxed when I watch TV after a busy day at school.

Obviously, television industry creates more chances for employment and makes so much effort to the flourish of economy. Even though television improves the standard of people’s lives in different ways, it should still be regarded as a double-edged sword. Nowadays, people need to pay more attention on the growing numbers of “couch potatoes” and the increasing cases of fake ads on TV.
