With the fast development of technology, the world has become more and more complex with hi-tech inventions, along with which is the more occupied life for living in the present. The travel instrument has been replaced by cars rather than horse, the communication tools have been replaced by computers or cell-phones rather than letters, the social network has been replaced by a rather bigger virtual one than the original realistic one. Does it mean that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present with all these changes that build up the new and complex today?

When it comes to merely the operation methods we adopt to use the hi-tech facilities, my answer is “Yes”. Admittedly, we are expected to learn how to handle those facilities we use today to make our life more convenient and efficient. For example, computers are the product in new ages, people even pay for the courses that teach them how to use this complex instrument. In this sense, looking back for an understanding of the past serves us no good, since there did not exist any kinds of facilities that is similar to such newly developed equipment as computers, cell-phone in any aspects.

However, there are things that has not been changed with the passage of time, and we can refer to the past for guidance. These unchangeable parts of our lives are exactly those relevant to family, friendship and affection, the ever-lasting themes of human beings. One glance of the past would teach us the importance of connection between family members, friends and lovers. We still share the same customs regarding how to show our feelings for the special ones. These customs make up of the basis of understanding between people. One cannot cut the connection between past and current world in the aspects of continuous customs, traditions and the same ancestors we share.

Sometimes, even the so-called “new” problems can still find their reflection in the past. This is why the business schools include case study in
their curriculums. Although the conditions of past and current incidents varies, the problems can still be solved by applying the same principle because it is the essence that keeps still. Similarly, we confront with new and complex circumstances, nevertheless, the past experience could still teach us that the quality of insistency, humbleness and diligent are essential in making achievements. All of these can be learned from the successful elites in the past.

All in all, living in the new and complex today, we can still learn from the past for reference, because the basis of our civilization and the essence of the problems are the same for the passage of time. It is the ability to seize the essence of issues that matters and helps us to success the wisdom generation after generation.
