ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
By making the conclusion that tradition and modernization are incompatible, the speaker seems put them in opposite positions. However, in my opinion, in most time tradition and modernization can coexist friendly, even though at some extreme situations, we must choose one of them.
First of all, tradition and modernization can combine together to create more value. For one reason, modernization developing from tradition makes people pay more attention to tradition. Many new disciplines come from old disciplines such as biochemistry which requires its researchers both knowledge of biology and chemistry need people pay more attention on the old disciplines, without the knowledge of which the researchers cannot go further. Especially when more and more new disciplines developing from the old disciplines come to the world, scientists began to emphasize the importance of the old disciplines. For another reason, tradition can be the instruction of the modernization. A lot of companies which run over several decades have accumulated their own traditions about how to survive during the intense competition. Though these companies keep on changing their paces to try to be the bellwether of their industries, their traditional kernel spirits of managing are still the same.
Moreover, tradition can spread though modern technologies which help the traditional things be known by many people who hardly have any opportunities to touch them. For example, every ethnic group has its own tradition culture which may be focused on less frequently due to people's attention are increasingly paid to other things especially work. Fortunately, television and worldwide computer connections prevent traditional culture from extinct. Many videos makers try to record their traditional culture through DV's camera. They broadcast the videos via television and put them on the internet, so that more people can acknowledge the tradition cultures even become fans of those cultures from then on. Therefore, to some extent, modernization makes tradition known by more people than before.
Admittedly, at some extreme situations, we may get a headache that tradition and modernization compels us to choose only one from them. In modern society, as the population increasing ,the city government has to sign on the documents which indicate to dismantle the old buildings which even may be the paragon of the local buildings. Because these buildings, though with high traditional meaning, supply much lower residents compared to skyscraper while take up as large land as the latter.
In sum, I concede the speaker’s assertion is reasonanle to some extent, however, the speaker falsely broaden his assertion to embrace all the possibilities. To make our life better, we need both tradition and modernization, because modernization can aborb the marrow of tradition to produce new things while tradition give us instructs of new fields. |
