Is it better to spend money on something that lasts long time, such as an expensive piece of jewelry, or spend on something that provides a short-term pleasure, such as a vacation?(05/18/07)
In general, people always focus on the long-lasting quality while they spend money on something, like jewelry, antique, or book. The psychological explanation, I think, is that people hope money can be worth spending out of a long-term consideration. Spending money on it is a better choice accordingly. Besides, long-lived stuff usually means a lot, such as the status of wealth or noble, the chase of life that has high-class tastes. Moreover, it becomes a symbolic representation which in memory of a meaningful event, or is used for collection even investment. Take diamond ring as an example. A diamond ring not only implies a permanent marriage but also treasures the wonderful emotion up.
On the other hand, it can be argued that short-term pleasure is obtained more easily than durable enjoyment, and positive effect which is brought by the short-lived feeling is faster and more significant. For instant, traveling in a couple of days is a good way to alleviate stress and relax, at the same time it help traveler broaden outlook, or accumulate knowledge. Dose not it have coordinative impact on the person, comparing with the thing lasts long time?
As to which way is better, the answers vary.Spending money is a process that satisfies not only people’s material need but also psychological need, no matter which way it is. Therefore, I think whether one way is better than the other depends on specific circumstances.
