As is know to all, a different language is one of crucial characteristics of a unique culture. Every local language is a nature link of people who belongs to different original areas. No matter which degree of human civilization developed, the charm and the expressive force of a localism replaced by an official language impossiblely.

In contemporary society, the development of the modes of transportation; the emergence of the electronic media resulted in more rapid transmission of information; also there is a mass migration movement and so on. These factors lead the appearance of a global village. It is necessary to use a single language as the ability of people influences one another mutually greater in the world, then some localism pass out of existence and some other localism extinct more or less. As biologists appealing to all people toprotect and to save the species of wildlife which are rare or near extinction, linguists call on human to protect the endangered languages.

What problem will bring about while some localism extinct? Firstly, the extinction of localism is the loss of culture. The localism means a lot to whole human civilization. All kinds of local languages meaning to human culture identified with biological diversity meaning to ecological system, if we lost some localism we have no method to gain them again. Secondly, the losing of localism may lead to the loss of local literature. For instance, In Wu’xi, a lot of young people refuse to learn localism even look down on it nowadays. I think there is no way that a young man who can not speak localism of Wu’xi sing the play of Wu’xi well. With less and less young people having a command of the Wu’xi local languages, the play of Wu’xi biased on the localism of Wu’xi will lost and the result is almost certainly “cultural dislocation”. In addition, many localisms and official languages are close-knit, the loss of localism may affect official language. As for Shanghai localism and putonghua, “zi lai shui(running water)” and “dian deng pao(electric bulb)” etc. which word first appeared in Shanghai localism absorbed by putonghua. In some extend, putonghua enriched localism. So, putonghua seemed gray while localism extinct.

The fast fade of some language arouses broad attention in the international community, especially the linguists from different countries. Thus, Experts advanced many reasonable proposals. For example, we can speak official language in the public place but we can talk local language between relation and hail-fellow; we can speak official language in a every formal situation but we can talk localism in private; we should speak official language at school but we should talk localism at home. Few linguists suggest that television station make special program which about local literature such as local play. With the purpose of passing on our local culture to the younger generations we should protect our local language.

As a pearl necklace, we should not lose any one pearl. We will strengthen the protection of local language which on the edge of extinction.
