When people have difficulties that they are not able to solve, they would always tend to others for suggestions. Frankly speaking, people actually do not take others’ age into account when asking for assistant. Normally, the first person people turn to is a choice people unconsciously make. So when it comes to the question whether the advice from the elder is more valuable than the one from the same generation, people do not answer it directly because though they have got many advices from others, they never thought about it before. As far as I am concerned, I don’t agree with this idea. Whenever we have problems, both the advices from the old and ones from the same generation have certain effect on us.

To begin with, as the elder have much more life experience that we never experienced, their advices are definitely useful to us. Take my own experience as example, when I received the letter of acceptance from university, I was very excited but also confused. As it was the first time I would leave my parents and live alone, I didn’t be well prepared for it. At that time, I called my elder friends and talked with them about my situation. Luckily, they shared their experience with me, told me what was necessary for life in the dormitory and also encouraged me to face it as it would be a brand-new phase of my life. I was really heartened by their kindness and finally I conquered this life task. From this example, we see that the elder’s advice is what lightens our obscure future. Without their abundant experience, we may have to suffer delays and setbacks.

On the other hand, a valuable advice is not only based on how much experience the adviser has, so the argument that the elder’s advice is more valuable than one of the same generation is not convincing. For students, if we have to deal with interpersonal issues that happened at the same generation, we would prefer to ask friends in the same age for advice. The same generation is regarded as who can understand us better because we are born in the similar period and we have more in common, so we feel easier together with them. Under certain conditions, we don’t have generation gap and we can solve a problem in a more harmonious way. Unlike listening to the elder’s advice only, the advice the same age gives is more based on the discussion between us.

To sum up, it is hard to definite which advice is more valuable, as there’re many aspects people should take into consideration. Our future could be clear with the elder’s abundant experience, also we couldn’t deny the assistance we get from the same generation’s advice.
