The communication problem between parents and children seems to be a permanent social focus. Had the generation gap been shrinked in past 50 years? Somebody asserts that the parents led a better understanding than they do nowadays, nevertheless, I defend for the fathers and mothers in present society that they spend more to stay closer with the minds of their kids and the understanding bridge between the old and the young is much consolidated compared with that in 50 years ago.

Granted that the adults had more spare time 50 years ago since the work load was not heavy as it is, unfortunately, parents in that times seldom spend time communicating with their children. One family has several children in the past. That means the kids had to share the love and concern of their parents. Furthermore, In China, the traditional minds advocate that parents dominate the whole family and the most important quality of children is filial obedience to the parents. 50 years ago, this tradition is the main ideology in our country. The parents, especially the fathers, possess the top priority to decide everything in the family, including the future of the kids doubtlessly. Children were only allowed to do what they were told without the possibility to express their propensity. Therefore, parents then didn't will to understand their children and the communication was nearly none.


With the infusion of democratic culture, both the parents and the younger generation tend to respect the minds of each other and make communication actively. Nowadays, the parents have realized that autocratic management is not a wise way to establish good family relationship. They prefer children to exchange minds with them and make negotiation on important issue. Take myself as an example, my parents treat me democratically since I was a little girl and I have right to vote almost every family decision, from purchasing a TV set and what major I should take in college. My father likes talking with me to know what I experienced in school and my opinion to study, school, family and society. Through such positive communication, not only my parents keep close with me heart to heart, but I learned to consult them when I meet problem in life and work


In spite of the adults are devoted themselves into work which costs them lot of time, two aspects of reality could be used to embrace my stands. On one hand, one pair of couple has only one child usually in current China. It is no doubt that they spend the whole concern on him/her so that the child obtains more time and love than the peers 50 years ago. On the other hand, the modern times offer various communication tools such as internet and cell phone. Even though the families are departed physically, they are able to keep contact understanding each other.

As summary, parents today are much closer with their kids resulted from the promotion of individual mind and society. They understand the youth more compared with they did in 50 years ago.

The lecture makes drastically counterargument against the 3 functions of "great house" from Chaco Canyon which are stated in the reading passage. The speaker rebuts each plausible theory respectively:
To begin with, the point made in the reading that the Chaco structure was used as residential building is cast doubt by the lecture. Granted that the outside of the "great house" looks like apartment for people living, the professor demonstrates that the inside of the structure failed to support the claim. Because there was no sufficient fire place for cooking to afford hundreds of people.

Additionally, the reading points out that another possible function of the "great house" is to store grain maize. Nevertheless, the professor argues that maize trees or maize containers should have been found in the excavation if this assumption is reliable. But in reality, none of such staff was exhumed. Therefore, this argument in the reading is unsupported.

Finally, the speaker denies the statement in the reading that ceremonial centers might be one usage of the Chaco structure. In contrary, according to the lecture, some other construction material was discovered besides the broken pots. Therefore, the professor illustrates that the broken spot might just be common trash of construction instead of a piece of credible evidence as container for meal in ceremony.
