There is widely held belief that as people's appearance and act reflects to a great extent, their values and interest, a rich knowledge of a society's value system can be obtained with observation of how its people behave and dress.(很好的改写) I agree to the view but it seems as well to me that not only observation but also the examination of history, economy, politics, etc. would be necessary if the truly profound understanding should be achieved.
To begin with, people are largely affected by social norms and culture in their way of behaving and dressing. Each society features its own rules of interaction, through following which will social stability be maintained and culture, inherited. In ancient China, manners top people's criteria of judging others. Specifically, people in that society were expected to follow a long list of manners, namely, ruler guiding chancellors, father and son, men and women and such.(我觉得加上那两个and比较好) From all these social practice, one can easily reach the conclusion that the ancient Chinese society highlighted hierarchy and no one was allowed to break the manners so that chaos was prevented. A society decides what education its people should receive, what rules they should be taught and all dos and don'ts. Although time from time some people stood out to rebel, the traces of most of social values could still be found in the majority of its people.
Furthermore, people have their influence on society they live in. No society can stay unchanged over long time and usually it is its people that brought radical reforms to social value system. The Native Americans would have been whipped out if no American whites stepped forward to get to know them. By understanding them deeper and better, those wise Americans finally change their views about Indians, thus changing the society as a whole, the result of which would feature the "Indian Reorganization Act" passed in 1934. The story of what happened to Indians over the past several centuries illustrates how men, despite what their society instructs them to do, affect and bring changes to the society in their own way. Consequently, inspection into people's behavior may drop a hint about which directions the society is to go.
Truly, observing its people provides us insight into a society. However, to form a significant understanding of it calls for studies on top of that, i.e. studies in history, economics, politics and such. (如果展开讲可能更有说服力)Without a proper combination of all these aspects of a society, the knowledge of its ideas can be superficial for hardly shall facts obtained from observation be analyzed to produce any profound results. Therefore, only by studying a society as a whole can people's way of behaving and dressing play a critical role in understanding it thoroughly.(每个开头句式都不同很好的做到了句式的多变)
To sum up, when it comes to getting to know a society, studying how its people look, dress and act is worthwhile. But in order to command an in-depth knowledge of it, one should take the society's history, economics, politics etc. into consideration.
