"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."


History happens all the time and we cannot realize its significance until we read about them in the textbook. Thus, the study of history appears indispensable for us. However, the statement that the study of history is only valuable that is related to our daily lives is superior superficial and irresponsible. Basically, it overlooks the importance of the study of history.

To begin with, the study of history directs the decision-making nowadays. Recall a famous proverb that describes the history, namely, history makes men wise. Indeed, the history acts as a mirror that reveals the previous faults and experience. Therefore, the significance of the study of history cannot be simply reflected by our daily lives. For example, there was a Nobel Laureate and African American civil rights activist in American modern history, Martin Luther King, who was considered as a hero, peacemaker and martyr. Although black equality like voting rights, desegregation, fair hiring has been widely accepted in the United States currently and past would no longer replay in our daily live, the study of history is still indispensable and valuable. In a sense, it reflects a kind of spirit and decision that struggles for the equality forever and it could be regarded as one of the most substantial spiritual wealth for human beings.

In addition, the study of history should not be restricted to the present merely. And more importantly, it has better get applied for the future planning and construction. In retrospect, there was a catastrophic disaster happened in the history that the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, leading to the deaths of its seven crew members. Even if the events has no relations with our lives, however, the study of this history plays an indispensable role in the Space Projects for humans. Without detailed study on this history that NASA’s organizational culture and decision-making processes was a key contributing factor to the accident, the similar faults and accidents would definitely occur in the futuristic projects. The values of study of history embody a sort of wisdom that gathers experience for the future. Another similar example could be found in the environmental fields. As the environmental problems like global warming, deforestation and ozone depletion becoming more and more severe, the study on them has started especially stems from the study of history. Generally speaking, we are interested in when and how the crisis came into being. Again, those problems may have little effects on our daily lives, however, the study on previous environment could provide us the diverse experience and methods that could tackle the current ones and prepare for the future in advance for the sake of our generations.

To be sure, the study of history which is related with daily lives reveals its values maximally since everyone could observe it. However, the study of history should not be only restricted in our daily lives. In conclusion, the study of history has various and diverse significant values in terms of directing the present, gathering experience for the future.
