Issue 144
It is the artists, not the critics, who give the society something of lasting value.
When compare which contributing the society something of lasting value, artists, or critics? The author asserts that it is the artists not the critics that who take the job, however, in my opinion, when consider the complementary relationship between the two, we can generally conclude that both artists and critics leave the society something of lasting value.
Coming first to indicate that artists do indeed give the society of something of lasting value by many aspects such as inspiring people, advocate a social trends or new ideals, and that help decorate our lives more colorful. For instance, when we visit some museums, we benefit from the works of artists, Mona Lisa, the great work by Leonardo da Vinci, and her smile gives people a mood of peace and serenity; while Bach’s music brings people happiness and pleasures. These works are part of our treasures and were kept generations by generations, and now are honored as non-material culture heritage. Then, no surprise, artists are the contributor of something of lasting value to the society.
The second we here come to confirm that artists and critics are supplement to each other. What has been confirmed is the creative minds of artists add hue to our quotidian life, while a constructive criticism could help artists promote their working level and tell people how to be a good connoisseur, so critics without daunts do dedicate lasting values to the society. Take Van Gogh as example, during his lifetime, he has only a portrait sold for the reason that no one appreciate his work, however, after his death, many critics comment that the passion and enthusiasm in the works were underestimated, and these works are among the most brilliant ones in the history of arts. In brief summary,
all of the greatest feats in history, which gave society something of lasting value, are those created by artists and evaluated by critics. Appropriate critical evaluation might entice the people’s attention towards those works.
Consequently, due to analysis and reasons mentioned above, which sometimes intertwine to form an organic whole and thus become more persuasive than any one
of them, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that obviously both artists and critics give the society something of lasting value. |
