The speaker asserts that societies or groups of people would have a loss of identity, when they lack the rituals and ceremonies which help define a culture. I agree with this statement in some respects, the diversity of rituals and ceremonies is a character to distinguish dissimilar nations. However, this is not a only way to preserving culture identity, and in a sense the rituals and ceremonies is unculture and benighted.
Consider first the speaker's assertion that rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. I concede that each culture have its unique rituals and ceremonies, in order to dissipate fear, to beg for a favorable weather, to for a victory in battle or for thanksgiving. And the rituals also demonstrate an aboriginal religion in which the primitive believed. In primitive age, man always felt fear when death or visitation of Providence occurred by his side, because man was unable to account for natural phenomenon. This uncommon action is one of religion and culture's source, that is important to human beings. To this extent, I agree with the statement that rituals and ceremonies help define a culture.
However, while societies or groups of people want to preserve culture identity, the rituals and ceremonies only act as a little role in this work. To a nation, raiment, language, diet, etc are all the ways and means to preserve culture identity other than rituals and ceremonies. In common case, we could confer where one come from through one's local accent, because the accent is an indication about one's identity. Besides, while in such case that rituals is forbidden such as that a nation have been dominated by a cruel aggressor, Do the demos have a diminished sense of who they are or become slaves of a foreign nation? Obviously, the answer is 'NO'. Rituals could be forbidden, ceremonies could be forbidden, freedom could be forbiden, but nationhood cannot be taken away.
The last but not the least important, some rituals and ceremonies is filled of cruelty, that is unculture and benighted. Ancient civilization all had a history of anthropophagy in rituals and ceremonies, which was an extreme means to demonstrate power of control others rather than a drive of hunger. In order to preserve culture identity, do these rituals and ceremonies retain entirely and reasonably? In my opinion, any human rights societies do not see it happen and take no measures with a quiet conscience. Now, the human society is developing rapidly and in fact human is more and more civilized rather than barbaric, which is also a trend of development of human culture. In other words, some rituals and ceremonies are no longer to hold anymore because of cruelty and barbaric of them.
To summarize, I agree with the statement that societies and groups of people should have a strong sense of who they are. However, only rituals and ceremonies is not enough for this purpose, and this is possible that they would do harm to human society. |
