TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
WORDS: 383 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2010/3/23 21:27:5
Is it really necessary for a public official to maintain the highest ethical and moral standeards? Could this lead to be an effective leader? From my perspective, a certain degree of high standards of morality and ethics is needed, with no necessity of the highest.
To begin with, an official without a high ethical and moral standard would lead the public to . Further, a politics who does not establish whole morality and ethics and/or act against others' moral acceptance will gain little support from the masses. For instance, Bill Clinton, American president, who was involved in plenty of scandals finally found Americans turn their back on him. Although he did a good job during the presidency, his behaviours ran aflour people's expectation. Of course, he could not be seen as an effective leader. Therefore, without a high standard of morality and ethics, the public official cannot be trusted by the common people, resulting in less effectiveness under his or her leadership.
In addition, with high morality and ethics, the politic care about the nation and people, make decisions for them and spare no effors to serve them. Moral and ethical standards are the beacons that lead one towards integrity, goodwilling and . Under their guidance, one thinks more of others than oneself and concerns more about the country than the power he/she posesses. Franklin J. Roosevelt is one typical examples. During the Great Depression, he established a serious of policies and therefore prevented America from continuous depression. His effective effortsand concerns about people win himself nationwide admiration from people. Obviously, it is high morality and ethics enforce officials act for the sake of people and realize effetiveness by people's admiration.
However, on the other hand, the highest ethical and moral standards are not desirable, since too high standards would restrict what officials can do. Politics sometimes need to do something contraversial. if one is too righteous to conduct it, he/she may not fullfil the task. Take lying to the public for example. In some urgent situations, to conform the public and stablize the condition, telling lies are strategic and effective. But one cannot do that if he/she hold the highest moral standards and thus believes li. For that matter, a highest standard of right and wrong curbs the effectiveness of conducting policies, as one would only do what he believes is right.
In sum, in order to conduct effective policies, a public official should hold a relatively high moral and ethics standard, while without it, one would be untrustworthy and beyond it, one could not carry out all of the effective policies.
