TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
Professors, one of the most indispensable roles in education in college, are expected to provide useful knowledge as well as practical skills to students. In some theoretical areas, they do not need to work outside to gain practical skills, while in other cases, it is advisable for them to moderately work outside.
To begin with, in areas where most concentrations are on theories and ideas, it is not a necessity for faculties to find other jobs; also, it is not easy for them. For scholars who study philosophy, literature, archaeology and the like, studying more deeply on the subjects is more useful than to find some practical jobs. While the jobs usually offer little help in their development of theories, but require them to make full use of their subjects, doing researches would enhance their academic knowledge and reputation. And it is always the knowledge that teach students, and reputation inspire them, thus leading to a better quality of instruction.
Except for those theoretical fields, for disciplined which demand a combination of theories and practical, working for companies or factories out of universities would provide first-handed experience, which makes professors better understand the requirements of students skills and thus improving the quality of the courses. Students who enter college would more or less expect more wonderful academic or professional achievements in the future. If professors know the demands of their future jobs, adjust their courses' directions to fit the standards and ask students to fulfill the goals earlier, obviously, this would not only improve the quality of education, but also place students to a favorable positions in future job hunting. An typical illustration of the case is that in laws majors, good professors are mostly great lawyers, who win cases outside universities. In that way, they can always teach students of experience from their own lawsuits.
Although working practical jobs would help faculties improve their education, too much energy putting on working out of school leads to distract their own teaching progresses. Working outside could only be considered as a valuable opportunity to contact with the latest information and technologies in the fields. Overlooking its importance would prevent faculties from improving the quality of education in the end. Supposing one works eight hours outside universities, how could he or she be able to teach students well in the rest time of the day? Further, if one focuses more on his or her latest project in the company than any academic activities, how could one truly solidify one's teaching quality? In a word, it is also important to moderately invest one's time and energy on the practical work; otherwise, the quality of instruction would be reduced.
To conclude, in the realms that theories and ideas come first, faculties finding jobs outside would not be helpful in improving the quality of education, whereas in other fields moderately work for companies and organizations provide professors first-handed experience to combine theories and practical in classes.
