ISSUE 208
208. "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

Sometimes, we would catch one man's values quickly from his appearance, but as an old saying said, "Do not judge one man by his looks.", it seems that judgeing one people by his looks is not as simple as author supposed. Yet the society's ideas and values, which revealed by many facets containing the appearance and behavior of people, were more complicated than individual's. Observing the appearance and behavior of its people provided a few information, even an opposite signal to the observer.
To some person, individual's wearing and act indeed reveals their attitudes and interests partially. For example, if you saw a person in red and laugh loudly, you may probably suppose the one be an extroversion rather than an introversion. As well as, members of a community always wear clothes in common since the person who take same attitudes and interests alway be together. Most professors wears plain and simple, while the rock star's wearing is usually exaggerated; they two are rarely same.
Yet, not everyone does same things. Probably, what they do just follow what others do without any individual's attitudes or interests. Girls in Bohemia long skirt probably have no idea about Bohemia; people celebrating Christmas Eve probably are unknown about Jesus; and guys providing warmly a cup of tea to a guest might dislike the guest. Hence, if too much rely on the information of people's attitudes and appearance, which influenced by many different factors, like tradition, mass media, etc., we will not obtain overall or genuine attitudes and interests of them.
People's selection of their clothes and their behavior are influenced by mass media. The series fashion magazine directed people to choice their apparel rather than their own interests. People’s behavior may be influenced by the characters in television.
At the same time, we will misunderstand people's attitudes and interests because people's social situations will limit their dressing and behavior. In many cases, the income, occupation, social class constrain people's selection on their dress. A girl working in bank has to dress uniform even though she enjoys an informal clothes because her job. We also can not too much rely on the behavior to tell people's genuine attitudes because people's education level will influence it. Therefore, the best way to acquire people’s attitudes and interests must consider comprehensive factors such as including individual and social situations and the effect of mass media which can shape people's outside appearance and behaviors.
In addition, referring to the whole society, the values and ideas are more difficult to hold on by observing its people's act and looks. Of course, you can tell a few about it if you are so lucky to meet one person whose appearance and act agrees with the social values not misleading by factors we have mentioned above. Supposed you have never been abroad, and then one day you meet a rude foreigner, could you confirm where the foreigner came from is a rude country? It sounds absurd, but often occurred. Social values contains culture and tradition, which unlikely to be reflected entirely by people's appearance and act. It also mostly manifests itself in policy, law, and the way populace live and so on. If you want to understand a society and its values and ideas, the best way is spending a period of time to live in the community.
Since I have been judged by appearance, I know the misunderstanding feeling. Although the appearance and act can tell something about the individual or the whole society, we have to be cautious to make such a decision without considering other factors generally.
