ISSUE 103
103. "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
分类:历史
The study of history is a prolonged and wide-ranging process. Anyone or anything existed in the river of history would be probably taken as an object. However, as for the value of the study of history, there are always various kinds of controversies which contain one kind of views as the topic says that only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives, the study of history has value, and also other opinions. Such as, history itself attains value whatever it relates to.
I concede that the study of history obtains more value to the extent that it is relevant to people lives, because people’s livelihood is the greatest precise for any other things. With the development and modernization of society, almost every country would enhance itself comprehension based on this reason. Most of the development of technology and producing of new things are basically around the problem of people’s daily lives which is a common cognition. So does the study of history, whether the relation between which and people’s daily lives is close or not seems a significant factor which would potentially determine the value of the study. If the research project of history stray away from the main direction of people’s lives, both people and scientists would inevitably be confused with a similar question why they need to study this project, whether the time or energy spent on this project is just a waste. Moreover, the masses would hardly be willing to sustain the study developing which needs the country’s financial support from the people.
However, we have to consider if government should limit the study of history unrelated to daily life. First of all, a problem meditated above all is how people can restrict the range of the study of history. Apparently, no one has the capability to stipulate this range, because no one can assert that some extent of historical research would be definitely none of people’s daily lives’ business in future. For example, in 1543 as a time when most people believed that the sun and the planets circled around the earth, a man named Copernicus suggested that the earth and the other planets revolved around the sun. At the history, maybe at that period when the study of astronomy was confined on astrology, hiliocentricism had no value for people’s daily life. Nevertheless, who would imagine the theory at that time becomes a basic discovery for modern scientific research? Obviously, the answer is no one.
The same to the study of history, no one can anticipate the sight of future, and no one can make certain nowadays study unrelated to daily life have not value for long. Our world is developing on an unsuspected way, thus we would hold a mode of discovery of all unknown things. As well as, historical study would bring us more information about the world and experiences of ancestors which is a powerful instrument on our finding way with unaccountable inspire or efficient methods.
In conclusion, although I agree with the view that study of history related to daily life would be more valuable, I cannot deny historical research irrelevant with people’s livelihood has value to study. All I can say is that people should pay more attention to the projects of history on daily life without negligence of the study of history not about people’s daily lives. |
