Does competition generally have more negative effects than positive ones in most societies? Throughout history, competition inspires people to try every means to survive in complicated environment, which has led to many tragic incidents in various aspects. However, in the process of competition, the personal quality and social productivity have both improved a great deal.
To begin with, competition is opposite to complete fairness, so it encourages people to compare with each other that only the strong are able to survive and the weak will be ruled out. The essence of social competition is in fact similar to the law of survival, which sounds rather cruel for human. Under the pressure of survival and competition, a large amount of social conflicts and problems appeared, including income polarity, poverty, unemployment, and the forth, which tend to cause distrust, dishonesty, depression and anxiety deep in people's heart. A tragic example is the incident of melamine. In 2008, many Chinese babies were diagnosed that they got calculus in their kidneys, which shocked their parents and the whole society. After research, the fact astonished and enrages consumers greatly-several main milk powder producers in China's milk market added melamine instead of protein, to lower their input of ingredients, in order to occupy an advantageous position in market. The pressure of competition has screwed many businesspersons’ morality and conscience that they would rather harm the interest of consumers to make profits.
On the other hand, sole competition initially may benefit society in many aspects such as improving productive efficiency; accelerate the pace of technological advancement and the like. The introduction of China's market economy supports this conclusion. Before 1978, all the production procedures, job positions, wages, and even distribution of goods are determined by government, which smothered activity and inspiration of economy. After Deng Xiao ping's research and thorough consideration, he introduced the market economy to China gradually, and since then the productive efficiency has increased, the society has become active and wealthy, what’s more important is that the problem of food were finally solved, which has haunted China for thousands of years.
Finally, we have to identify that competition itself does good to society so a more advanced mechanism is needed. It is not the competition but the deficiency of social cooperative facilities should be blame for the disadvantages and problems. Government needs to complete the law system and social welfare system altogether to cooperate with the competition, to compensate for its shortcomings. Finally, our society will be productive and harmonious.
To sum up, every coin has two sides. For a society in the hope of developing itself, competition is indispensable in every aspect for its irreplaceable influences on efficiency. On the other hand, a complete and advanced mechanism is needed to compensate for the disadvantages and deficiencies of competition as well. With an active and cooperative relationship, competition will play a more and more positive and significant role rather than negative in societies.
