Issue103
I find the speaker's claim that the study of history is valuable only to the extend that is relevant to our day-to-day live is to be specious on the count. It would be a myopia insight of restricting humans only strive to our daily life rather than guiding the present and planning for the future.

To begin with, by studying the grave mistakes in the past helps us to avoid repeating those mistakes for living in the present. Consider, for instance, that clear-cutting the forest in the upper reaches of Yangtze river, in China, set into motion a chain of water lose and soil erosion that threatens the ability of soil to hold water, which eventually resulted in catastrophic flood, in 1998. Hopefully, as a nation can draw from this firm lesson to prevent such thing from happening. Also consider that the emission of green house gas, which has warmed the earth to the point that it threatens the very survival of the species—including the human beings. Luckily, we have realized the deleterious impact on humans and ecological system as a whole of excessively emitting carbon dioxide, and therefore a great deal of effective measures are putting into practice. All of this examples of studying history provide value far beyond its impact on the daily lives of people.

Additionally, some other examples of the study of history beyond its effect on daily life is the treatment of the environment and the earth as a whole. Looking back to the history, lots of tragedy on environment and the earth, which were almost raised by various human behaviours can give a valuable lessons to we huamns. Consider, for example, the depletion of atmospheric ozone—absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, which has warmed the Earth to the point that if no measures are taken that the human race's survival will be in danger. Another chilling example is nuclear leak in Chernobyl, Ukraine. The leaking reactor blew at the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl, which killed 31 people and nearly 300 people were treated for radiation poisoning. Moreover, Love Canal, a small town in upstate New York near Niagara Falls, was destroyed by waste from chemical plants. In short, history provides us valuable lessons that its impact not only on our day-to-day life but also relevant to our environments in the future.

Studying human history can help us better able to understand and appreciate whole human beings. Firstly, the cultures of the past defuse into the humans evolution, this is true especially in custom, languages, and morals of past cultures. And after all, what more effective methods beside studying those is there for us to study cultures in the past? Secondly, a heightened awareness of cultural evolution in our own nation helps us formulate a more cohesive state. Studying the past of the China can encourage we Chinese to make concerted effort to resist aggression, and therefore to build a more powerful nation. and to study the past is a effective way to facilitate mutual understanding and cooperation across cultural and natural boundaries.

To sum up, the study of history leads to improvements in activities and decisions that have an effect reaching far into the future, beyond their daily lives. History can help us avoid repeating mistakes those are created in the past, can inspire us to learn more about our country, and help to construct a harmonious world where countrys are no boundaries.
