104.It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears.
What the author has concluded is that the formal education is the major way for culture to hand the ideas selected down from one generation to another, which sounds plausible at a first glance .However, I partly agree with it because formal education do play a role and partly disagree with it considering there are still other ways.
First of all, I certainly believe that formal education is an important way to perpetuate ideas and it is what the formal education comes for. Teachers teach us the knowledge and experience of the ancestors and the ways having been proved by them to be efficient in solving different problems. These knowledge and experience such as the golden mean and the law of gravity, through the test of hundreds of years and satisfied the needs of culture, are well preserved and handed down by the means of formal education. Other ideas which had been rejected and discarded by the former culture, for instance, the famous law that the earth is move around the sun founded by Copernicus, once were reexamined and bolstered by the facts, are also been handed down though the classes whereas the pseudoscience, thriving in the past and welcomed by the former culture, such as the alchemy and the astrology, never come back to the classes because the new culture has recognized their fallacies and discredited them.
Secondly, the formal education is also used to judge whether the idea is worth preserving and perpetuating. We are taught to be skeptical to the ideas pressed on our mind, including methods and words teachers say which sounds without proper reason or doubtful. By checking books, doing experiments, debating on the internet or face to face and write to the famous experts to searching for the right answer and the reason. In this kind of cases, education plays a role not only perpetuating the ideas but also valuing the ideas through preserving.
Admittedly, the formal education plays an important role as I concede above, however,it does not means it is the major and primary way that the culture used. We can not except other means insofar as the parents' influence, the law, the media, all of which may have the same effect as the formal education does. Parents are the first influence teachers to us in most cases ,for a large account of the social principles are taught by them and young children are likely to imitate the adults' social behaviors, which usually adapt to the culture of the society. Laws are the fundamental rule of people to restrain themselves and to judge the right and wrong. Different culture influences different laws in the same aspect ,for example, Abortion is considered to be a kind of murder in the west culture and reflects in the west countries' law to be illegal, whereas in the east countries such as china, it is required and compelled when a couple already has a child. Another way that is also important is the media. Media such as books, internet, televisions, music and film are good teachers to introduce us the knowledge just like the formal education does but last much longer and more flexible in time. To an infant and a child under the age of going to school, it is parents tell them the right and wrong; to an adult, books and television are primary way to get the culture idea after leaving school; To all the people, law on the basis of the culture is doubtless and inextricable. These means have their own uses and advantages in different situations in contrast with the formal education, hence it is arbitrary to say which is primary or major according to different personal experience and growing surroundings.
In sum, formal education is an important way but without the comparison with other means such as the parents' influences, the law and the media, the author's conclusion that it is the primary way is reasonless and unconvincing.
我重新改了一下,感觉开头观点的明确提出和结尾的升华都好难,本想改好一点,却无从下手,结果还是像阿狗一样生硬。然后我最担心的偏题问题和提纲就麻烦你帮我看一下了 |
