78、"Schools should be required to teach the essential interconnectedness of all human beings and thus help eliminate wars, cultural clashes, and other forms of conflict."
Facing increasing number of terrorist attacks like Sep. 11 and wars killing millions of people in no minute, people can help thinking of the terrible results brought by conflicts of different human beings. How can we mitigate or control these conflicts? Although teaching the essential interconnectedness of all human beings to students is no doubt a good idea, it cannot work in many situations. After all, cultural clashes and some forms of conflicts cannot be eliminated by this way.
Admittedly, as human beings, we share some same feelings and ideas as people in other countries and societies, so the essential interconnectedness is an invisible tache linking people of different races with different nationalities, religions and cultures. The success of the first Asian-African Conference witnesses the importance of common places of people from different countries. China's great Premier Zhou Enlai's idea of "seeking the common ground while putting aside difference" has become many countries' directive idea of diplomacy since then. Not only for diplomacy, many countries today offer class have something to do with all human beings' essential interconnectedness. Students are hope of nations' future, teaching them the importance of essential interconnectedness of all human is helpful to build more harmonious world tomorrow.
Another thing which gives me great impression is findings of American soldiers in Iraq. After getting into Iraq successfully, some American soldiers found many familiar things quite similar to what they had faced in hometown every day in many occupied bases of Iraq soldiers. Among these things, they saw Britney Spears' tapes is inside of recorders, posters of the Star War and some other Hollywood movies are every where on the wall, photos of blond models are put on tables and beds. All these show the aspect that Iraq soldiers love American culture. But on the other hand, they hate America and hope to kill Americans as many as possible. I cannot help thinking if their aspect of loving American culture can be developed stronger than animosity when they are still kids, a lot of war and terrorists could be avoided.
However, only essential interconnectedness of different people cannot completely eliminated wars, cultural clashes, and other forms of conflicts. As we all know, cultural differences of people living in different regions have been formed by special environmental and spiritual factors as the development of history. In other words, differences among different people are much more and influenced than common places. Trying to ignore differences is unwise and sometimes dangerous. In the middle of 19th century, English colonists ignored Indian religion and forces Indian soldiers to daub lard on bullets to make guns work. Indian soldiers' anger led to great insurgence of Indian people. So we can say, most differences and cultural clashes cannot be eliminated by essential interconnectedness.
All in all, although schools should teach the essential interconnectedness of all human beings, we cannot hope such teaching can play great roles in mitigate conflicts. Only by seeking common places on the basis of respecting each people's culture and customs can we develop peace and harmonious world.
