Can we draw society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior, such as look, dress, and act, etc, of its people? According to the speaker, the answer is positive. Admittedly, some factors will make the apearance and behavior less availabale to judge a society's ideas and value. Yet I generally agree the speaker's assertion, in that what we act and dress are largely determined by our inclinations, which can reveal the idea and values of a society.
To begin with, the trend of dressing style and appearance of a society can demonstrate its idea and values. It is nature that we would like to dress ourselves in the prevailing style of the society, which shows our belief, and prevents us from being regarded as eccentric or outdated. Therefore, it is not difficult for us to find numerous examples in history. For instance, in the early 20th century, Zhong Shan style coat is the most prevailing clothes for Chinese. Not only did such dress style reveal the respect to the admirable revolutionist Sun Zhong Shan, who toppled the Qing Dynasty, an autocratic regime, but also reflected the desire of Chinese--making China stronger, richer, and more democratic. Besides, let us turn to the time closer, during 1960s and 1970s, Western society witnessed a social movement which rebelled the tradition values and called for love, peace and personal liberty. Young people of that time were dressing in a Hippie style, with a long hair, blue jeans, and so forth. Thereby, from the appearance of its people, we are able to tell a society's ideas and values.
In addition, not only can the dressing style reflect the social ideas and values, but also behavior can serve this function. As human, each behavior or act is determined by our mind. Also, human is a social animal, our attitudes and interests, to some extent, reflect the social idea and values. For instance, the movement questing for the Civil Right in U.S revealed the values of equality and freedom. Also, its follower Anti-war movement, which finally played an important role to force the U.S government to retreat from Vietnam, reflected the common acknowledgement that the world needs peace and love. Apart from these, religion serves a good example to prove that the behavior can reflect a society's ideas and values. Hence, we can conclude much by observing the behavior of people, which can show a society's ideas and values.
Admittedly, I concede that there are other factors to determine the society's ideas and values, Only by the appearance and behavior may we make misinterpretation, especially in today's highly globalize world. In the large cities, there are hardly any differences between Hong Kong and New York, people there all ware the same style clothes, listen to pop musics, and watch Hollywood movies. However, we still can tell HK from NY by trivial behavioral differences. One need look no further than the dinner manners--In HK one will pay for all, while in NY, everyone pays their own bill, which reflects the difference in the philosophy of relationship between the western and eastern society.
To sum up, in some cases, only by the appearance and behavior may we make misinterpretation about the social ideas and values. However, I strongly agree that we can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
