76,"A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin."
The argument above included several respects that are not quite convinced .First ,the generalization and the reliability of the survey are questionable .In addition ,the author claims the relationship which come to a extend lacked of logical assistance .Finally ,other alternatives are ignored to the explanations .I will state each of these flaws as follows .
To begin with ,the excerpt fails to assure me that the survey based on a reliable and general fundamental samples.First ,what is the circumstance of this group of volunteers ,for example ,age ,gender ,vocation ,and the most importanct fact ,the skin characters ?If the group of volunteers are limited in a certain area above ,the survey is not aimed at the ordinary mass and the result might be attributable to those particular individuals .Hence ,the generalization drawn might not apply to most people .In addition ,even the survey is broader ,one must consider whether the survey was based on a general geographic or climatic condition .If the survey was limited in a warm or wet regions ,the reliability is weakened because no evidence shows the utilization of this product in other different aera will equally prove this result .
Secondly ,the argument assumes that the correlation between the use of the face cream and improvement of the face skin means that the utilization lead to a skin change .But there are several inexpungible possibilities might be regarded as a cause of the result .For example ,the application of the mild soap may attain some possibility to this effect .Another flaw is the every morning's survey .The author fails to provide assurances that the volunteers didn't take some tend for their face in the other time of the day .In addition ,the means applying this product is also not mentioned .If this group of people prefer apply this while knead on the face ,maybe it is the massage not the face cream that take effect .
Finally ,the auther 's position that the explanations for the study results baesd on the volunteers 's report are too haste to conclude .A month is not long enough to prove the product 's endurable quality .If this kind of face cream is only efficient in a month ,after this time ,the skin maybe resist the improvement ,or even worse ,the skin comes back to the initial state .Moreover ,the auther unfairly assumes that the reports from the volunteers are justifiable ,but I cannot accept this conclusion .The element of psychology or expectation for this treatment weigh heavily against the report .Moreover ,the expection for the treatment verys from person to person and the appraise for a marked improvement also bases on different standards .In addition ,the approaches only based on looking and feeling is hardly impersonal and scientific .Maybe ,the toxin has been deposited deep below the surface of the skin and a side-effect will be caused by it .
In sum ,the argument ,while it seems logical at first ,has several problematic aspects above .
