As the term "choice" is a very complicated one, we can not oversimplify the notion that whether the absence of choice is rare or not. In my judgment, we should get down to more facets of the issue before we could get a comprehensive conclusion.
Choice, as a processing of choosing or the things that can be chosen, is not rare in our daily lives at all. No matter it is the breakfast coffee choice or the career you choose to live by [live by career搭配么?:p]; from the art genre you preferred to the political party you attend, we must make innumerous decisions. All that above [Above all] should thank to the incredible development of human civilization. Without the uncountable new products of the same kind, we do not have to be confused about which one is better. By the same token, if it were not for the realization of how important it is to allow people to choose whatever he/she wants or thinks within the restrains of laws as for a democratic society, how could we have so many chances to encounter those choices? Just because the progress that all human beings have attained in the history of development, we now entitle to more welcomed choices than ever. And I strongly believe that, this trend will continue, people will enjoy more choices to really "design" their lives, but still within the scope of laws and other restrictions of course.
Choice, in another hand, means "the right to choose" or "the freedom to choose". In this case, it actually depends on different individuals. Nowadays, many people complain that they can not get their favorite jobs, or they can not enter some certain kinds of fields and so on. It seems that their right [rights] to choose are robbed. There are many reasons that are responsible for this phenomenon. For instance, even if the slavery has been abolished many decades ago, the African Americans are still discriminated in many job fields, whether you admit it or not. [这个例子让老美ets看是不是不太好啊:p] When it comes to women, especially in some developing countries, they are still [still are] not allowed to go out to work or go to school. Under these circumstances, it is the society that deprived of their right to choose. Yet, there are other situations. If one illiterate wants to be an engineer, of course, it can only become his daydream. He should not complain anything, as it is he who does not have the right to choose to be an engineer, not something external that grabs the right from him. After all, everyone has the right to choose his/her vocation, or life style theoretically. But the premise is that you are qualified for this kind of right, which is based on your knowledge and capability. Because most of this kind of choice is bidirectional, that is to say, whether you are able to approach the goal you want is not only dependent on yourself, but also, the thing you possessed for the opportunity to choose you! Hence, the more you have , the more rights you will have to choose, similarly, the more freedom you will enjoy. Furthermore, the principle is still effective when it refers to a nation. A prosperous nation can choose to be a candidate of hosting Olympic games, or to be a world police, but a poor country can only regard it as a extravagant wish. To improve the strength of a nation in all aspects, to make it attend in more international affairs, as a result, more choices will be available to this country.
[这一段开始说从individual level讲,但后来还谈到了国家,显得有些乱,是不是可以把这段再理理,或许可以拆成两段]
In sum, our world is drenched in the ocean of choice in most cases, thanks to the enhancement of the whole society. Also, we have to make millions of decisions which could make disparate lives. What is more, we should gain enough knowledge and wisdom to prepare for the choice of our society.
每一段都要顶格写,下次要注意哦:) |
