Does the study of history have value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives? At first glance, this opinion seems convincing; however, further reflections tell us the study of history has value not only in our daily lives, but also in many fields, such as science, business, environment, etc. So, I cannot agree with the speaker's contention.



In the first place, when it comes to the field of science, the study of history can bolster and strength the development of science. As the Francis Bacon, who was one of the famous British philosophers, said, "Histories make man wise." To study the history of science can help us to know more about the way of ancestor making research, and we can absorb many experiences and lessons form them. Consider great scientist Newton, for instance, Newton who proposed “Three Laws of Mechanics”, wrote a book “Newton’s Principia” that had a far-reaching influence on science in the eighteenth century. He said a sentence to sum up his great success, "I see farther than others, because I stand on the giant’s shoulder." Without the former scientists' devotion, could Newton make such great success? In short, the study of history can make people more brilliant and prompt the development of science.

In the second place, this principle can also apply when it comes to the field of business. Admittedly, everything is changing form time to time as the Roosevelt, the American President, says," Growth and change are the law of all life. Yesterday's answers are inadequate for today's problems-just as the situation of today will not fill the needs of tomorrow." So, somebody may say the study history has no value. However, human studying the history is not simply learning the experiences of history but rather learning the essence of experiences, such as the spirits, the thinking and so on. Human can make full use of these essences of experiences to deal with today's problems. For example, many business leaders can study the book-" the art of war ", which was a book that taught people how to make war with adversary in China, and apply the thinking and spirits to the business world. In short, the study of history can help us to make profits in today's business world.

In the third place, the study of history can gives us many lessons in environment field. Pearl Buck, American female writer, said" If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday." As the words tell us that the history can tell us the way how we should do in today when we meet many new problems. For example, the study of recent decades of history of temperature can tell us the greenhouse, and we should minimize using the amount of fuel. The study of recent decades of history of nuclear can tell us the nuclear accidents at Three Mile and Chernobyl, and we should let them happen again. In a word, the study of history can help us not happen the environment problems again and guide us to better life in today.

In sum, from what I have discussed above, we can finally draw a conclusion that the study of history has value not only in our daily lives, but also in the fields of science, business, environment, etc. It can gives us many experiences and lesson that our ancestor experienced, and can guide us to better life in today, admittedly, "growth and changes are the law of all life.", as the Roosevelt said.
