485 words
I concede with the speaker that critics are helpful in making art’s lasting value more accessible and appreciable [赞!] to the mass. However, considering that the term of giving is conspicuously inappropriate for critics' function, the speaker’s assertion that critics give lasting value is open to doubt. Moreover, the speaker’s lopsided assertion also ignores possible negative influence from critic.
I concede that critics help us to appreciate art works and establish an aesthetic standard for our society, which facilitates the access to the lasting value of artistic masterpieces. Being excellent at evaluating works of art or artists themselves, critics are far more insightful than ordinary individuals in the domain of art. Therefore, by serving as a filter, which makes the most distinguished artistic works’ value more easily access to the mass, they can save time for the potential audience, readers, and so forth. Moreover, the commentary from critic, if represents the preference of the mass, can be taken as constructive feedbacks, which in turn will improve quality of art works.
However, "giving", which is a misleading term in this case, masks the actual function of critic--to discover and to appreciate. The misleading term overstates the importance of critics. In fact the creation of art works are premise of any meaningful appreciation--that is no criticism can be made until the accomplishment of an artistic masterpiece. And the development of art is right the cornerstone [赞!] for the advancement by critics. Moreover, the lasting value, which are innate in a masterpiece can neither be enhanced nor depreciated by criticism. Van Gogh's paintings get their fame only until the death of the talent, and the symphony of Beethoven are criticized to be discordant at its first performance. However, the masterpieces manifest their lasting value as time passes by, despite the initial acrimonious commentary received before. Both of the telling example illustrate that the lasting values of art works just stay here, waiting to be discovered, no matter what is in critics’ commentary. Realizing the fact, it would be arbitrary for the speaker to claim that the last values of art are granted by critics.
In the concern with the negative effects of critics, lies another reason why I content with the speaker. In this business-oriented society, critics sometimes prove themselves no more than vehicles for attracting eyeballs, especially when utilized by mass media. In this matter, the objectivity and integrity commentary is severely impaired by the pursuit for profit. Since the acrimonious commentary usually catch ones' attention first, the criticism of art works are distorted to pander the preference [再次赞] and take potshots on artistic creation, which, in turn, oppress the passion of artists’ creation and undermine the lasting value actually given by artists.
In final analysis, I appreciate the function of critics to evaluate and discover the lasting value innate within art works, which render the value easier to be accessed by ordinary individuals. However, it is artists rather than critic who give and create lasting values for our society. For the value of a masterpiece can neither be exaggerated nor diminished by the commentary of critics. Moreover, by overstating the importance of critics, the speaker simply ignores the negative influence that critics exert on our society.
