The goal of politics should not be the pursuit of an ideal, but rather the search for common ground and reasonable consensus.
------正文------
What is the goal of politics? To my mind, this question should be taken into account from two sides. On one hand, when the politics are representative of different nations or parties, we may concede that the goal of politics is to pursue an ideal. On the other hand, when politics are in charge of the stability of the society, impelling the process of the nation or coordinating various cliques of different benifit in a nation, we may consider the goal of politics to be the search for common ground and reasonable consensus.
As we know, different nations have their own regimes which will of course lead to different ideals. For example, nowadays in the world, there exist socialist nations as well as democratic nations. Socialist countries go in for sharing the whole fortune in the entire human race while democratic societies seek the democracy and freedom of individual. Different nations would naturally not arrive at the same political ideal-if we call it common ground or consensus-for they respectively have their own interest. Moreover, in feudalistic society, the monarch is the man who has the greatest power. And the ideal of him is to maximize his personal fortune or prolong his regime, which is obviously not the will of all people in society, let alone the common ground and reasonable consensus. However, it is just the ideal of the politics in the feudist society. Thus it can be seen that all politics have their own ideals, which may be the blueprint of the society and the guideline of the political activities. Without such an ideal, politics go nowhere.
However, as we allow for the practice of politics, we have to consider the consensus so that politics could reach their goals. Since the political activities need a stable social environment to be carried out, politics should reach a common ground reasonable consensus. The wise politicians would consider the opinions coming from people in majority. If they go on their own course, they would lose the support of their people and could not put their political ideal into practice. In this case, the goal of politics would be search for an agreement rather than an ideal. For example, different nations in the modern times, even if they have disparate ideals, always try their best to find an idea that could be accepted by each other in order to achieve their own interest. Also, inside a nation, politics activities shall pay attention to the ideas from people in a large proportion and make a reasonable consensus. A fitting example is that in my country, authority will raise the tax rate according to opinions from most of people that the revenue of tax is so little that authority could not have enough money to improve the infrastructure of my country. So, considering the actual practice of politics, we may deem the goal of politics as the search for common ground and reasonable consensus.
To sum up, just as we have seen above, in this day, every nation is pursuing its long-term ideal while the political activities in short-term are put into action by searching for common ground and reasonable consensus. So, from different angles of view, the question what is the goal of politics would have different answers. |
