------题目------
The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries.
------正文------
When it comes to that whether the greatness of individuals is decided by their contemporaries or their descendents, some people approve the former while some others believe the latter. However, the fact is that, the greatness is an intrinsic quality of the individuals not decided by others, and the only possibility is that others can evaluate the greatness of individuals subjectively. So that, the greatness evaluated by who is owing to the different situations.
To begin with, for professional evaluation, the giants are always found by people who live decades later. Reasons can be generalized as follows. First, the science is developing all the time, and the knowledge structure of human beings are more and more solid and improved. Contrasting to the earlier years' science and technology, they are more prosperous nowadays, and some difficulty problems for our ancestors seem like a piece of cake for us. For example, we all know that the earth is almost a sphere, but people living 1000 years ago purely believed that the earth is a cube. When Copernicus proposed that the earth was rotating around the sun, no one believed him, and he was sentenced to death for it. However, after years, his theory proved to be true and the fame came back to him. Accumulating all the marrows of the science historically, people become wiser and wiser to estimate the historic giants. Secondly, the theories are always brought earlier than their applications. People can only evaluate a result through examine its application, and then whether the theory is valuable can be checked. For this reason, time is a key factor for examination, and as a result the great persons' contemporaries can not judge their discoveries or inventions' true wealth.
Moreover, people living in different eras, feel different societal surroundings, the circumstance influences the judgment of human beings. As the society progressing, the democracy and civilization are enhanced. Many great ancestors who were not to be recognized in their years can be evaluated after them. Take Copernicus again, for he lived in a papalism society, once his theory was against the papacy's taste, he would never be recognized by the society. But time changed, when the whole society feels that democracy is suitable and merit for development, the chain in people's minds are unlocked, and the former scientific ideas are reexamined. Then we can return the fame to the significant predecessors.
Undeniable, some great people are emerging in their time. For their outstanding contributions are accepted by the society and the populace. Always, the contributions are linking to people's life closely. The former prime minister of Israel, Rabin, is such an outstanding people who devoted to improve the relationship of Israel and other Arabian countries especially Palestine. His greatness was recognized by the whole world and he got the Nobel Prize for Peace. Though he died unfortunately, but people in Israel even around the world would keep him in mind. People who are easily accessing to take the society and the populace into account are more likely to be identified by others, and insistence plays a key role. Doctor who saves the patients in emergency once can not be judged as great, but consideration for the patients from the day he or she becomes the doctor to his or her retirement or even longer would make the doctor praised as a great man.
To sum up, the greatness as an objective and internal quality, no one can determined by their taste but evaluate. Giants who research in abstruse areas are judged by their offspring more than their contemporaries, on the contrary, people's devotions which correlate to the society and social life would be rather easier examined whether great or not. Yet, we can not ignore the surroundings which influence the judgment of us, giants can be recognized in a more democratic circumstance. |
