[179]The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.
'It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious—an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction.'

The author asserts that company should hire Discount-Food instead of rehire Good-Taste Company based on the price, food quality and so forth. The statement is well-presented at the first glance, but not thoroughly well-reasoned after a further reflection. Author fails to recognize all the elements necessary to evaluate the circumstances, thus makes his statement suffer from several fallacies, as discussed below.

First, author mentions the prices of Good-Taste have risen in each of the last three year and it is the second most expensive caterer in the city. However, he does not provide any information implies that the company can not afford this price any more and it is out of budget. For a company who pay attention to the employee's welfare, if the price remains reasonable to the company, there is no need to change the food provider as long as it caters the employees' favor.

Secondly, author points it out that Good-Taste refuses to provide special diet meals whereas Discount-Food offer fish and poultry. Nevertheless, there is no any evidence show there are indeed need for those kinds of meals. It is waste to provide such food without customer.

Thirdly, author establishes his statement on three employees' complaint that Good-Taste's food taste bad, which itself is problematic. The survey time is too short to exclude the occasionality. It is reasonable to assume may be something changes the taste of three employees that day such as mood. In common sense, most people have no appetite when they encounter certain adversities. Furthermore, three people could not contribute to a justifiable reason to censure the food. On the one hand, author does not provide the accurate number of total employee. If there are hundreds of employees in the company, it would be a tough and daily work for company to change the food provider for only several complaints. On the other hand, it is also an impossible job for a foods company to carter all the people's interests since every people might have their particular favor. Even the best food company can not make sure everyone will enjoy their products. Thus, the evidence of complaint can not contribute to the reason changing the caterer.

Finally, even if the Good-Taste is not qualified to provide the food, author can not ensure us the expecting consequence that Discount Food would provide best service. Their sample food may satisfy his requirement, but may not satisfy the other's. And it is a family-owned local company, is it capable to provide enough food for a big company? There are not only two caterers in the city, how about the others? Is it possible to find a better alternative rather than both of these? Without ruling out all the possibilities, author can not convince me Discount-Food is the best choice.

To sum up, the author does not provide any grounded evidence that company should hire Discount-Food instead of Good-Taste. To lend the credibility to his argument, he should provide more clear evidence that the employees are no longer satisfy the food provided by Taste-Good, and company can not afford its price, meanwhile the Discount-Food is their best alternative. To better assess his recommendation, a company scale survey may be strongly helpful.

First, author同上,可数名词要么复数,要么加定冠词。记住加The mentions the prices of Good-Taste have risen in each of the last three year and it is the second most expensive caterer in the city. However, he does not provide any information implies that the company can not afford this price any more and it is out of budget. For a company who pay attention to the employee's welfare, if the price remains reasonable to the company, there is no need to change the food provider as long as it caters the employees' favor.

Secondly, author老毛病! points it 去掉it!out that Good-Taste refuses to provide special diet meals whereas Discount-Food offer fish and poultry. Nevertheless, there is no any evidence showshowing that there are indeed need for those kinds of meals. It is waste to provide such food without customer. 这一段太短了,问题没有分析清楚啊!最后一句话有点脱节!最好和前几句联系上!帮你修改一下!Without any contrary evidence it is possible that providing such special food will actually waste.
