Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively.

Should students question whatever they are taught instead of accepting it passively? In my view, what is taught to students might turns out to be wrong as time passes by so student should question what they are taught. However, they should not question every piece of knowledge and aspect of life.
It might seem tempting to agree with the speaker, on the basis that human recognition of the world is never complete. Due to the limitations of technology, the scientific data obtained for a theory is never completed, and might even be incorrect or wrong. Based on such data and facts, which are more or less misleading, human explanations of the world is never accurate and properly fit into every piece of nature principles. In addition, since the attempt to explain or theorize certain objective facts is beyond current level of human intelligence and is a subjective process, it may be not true. As a result, the advancement of science is the process of continually replenishing and consummate to perfection. Anything that is putatively accepted as gospel could even be proven wrong as time passes by. It was once believed that human beings are created by God, yet Darwin proved our evolutionary nature; Church stated that Earth was the center of the universe, yet Copernicus published the sun center theory; Newton said that energy is continuous in either macro and micro-world, yet Planck found the quantitative nature of it in micro-world. Therefore a science student should prepare to question the knowledge he learns in a school because as time passes by, it might be proved inaccurate or incorrect. After all, the main purpose of science education is not teaching students how to memorize facts, but how to cultivate reasoning and cogitative skills
However, this is not true for students under professional training or art students.
With social development and modernization, today's society is demanding more technicians and proficient workers than ever. As a result, most of the students go to college and graduate school for proper training to be a good worker or technician. Obviously, the purpose of professional education is to teach student to fit for a job and gain sufficient skills to compete in the labor force market. A tourist guide should memorize history and legends of a place; a technician should memorize the guidelines and principles of a specific working task in factory; a policeman should memorize and learn laws and regulations. Thus such a student should try his best to memorize facts and practice the knowledge. Only in this way can he obtain sufficient proficiency of professional skills. In addition, art students should also not question every piece of knowledge they learn, since the aim of art is to record hidden ideas and impulses of a society, as well as to express one's unique feelings. Thus no standard answer or true exists in art field, and different audience would have different feelings and understandings of the same work. As a result, question of art is merely a futile and meaningless effort.
Yet this is not to say that students under professional training or art students should never ask a single question, and science students should try to question every piece of fact and knowledge, especially the ones involved in our daily life. Students in arts and professional areas should only question when they misunderstand or miss knowledge taught at school, while science students should not question whether Earth exist and contribute to gravitational force; whether human beings are real or even whether the student himself is a man or woman; whether our world is stable or it may crash tomorrow--question every aspect of our real physical world is meaningless. Admittedly, every child might raise such questions driven by curiosity. Yet if an adult continually do so, we would only wonder if he is insane and does not have adequate intellect.
In the final analysis, the speaker's statement is partly true. A science student should question what he learns at school, but not every piece of facts in our daily life. Students under professional training and art students should not question as often as science students. |
