However, does it mean that we have to choose only one of them since the two are totally incompatible? The speaker claims so, while in my opinion, any extreme answer to this question is improper.

To start with, I concede that the distinction between tradition and modernization can not be ignored. On this point, we had better take a look at the definition of the two terms, as it's acknowledged by most people, the tradition usually refers to some principles, religions, crafts, as well as customs which have been handed down from generation to generation, while the modernization have a relative short history but can better represent the recent life. On this basic, they are differed from each other.

On one hand, tradition always contains something old concept, which should be replaced by our new understand and discovery of the objective world. For instance, in some country, women's social status was considered to be lower than that of male for quite a long time, thus many of their rights, such as to join in the public activity, or make important decision for the family, were deprived. While as the improvement of fairness in our modern society, people realize the unfairness lies in the tradition idea towards the women and make a change of it.

On the other hand, besides the concept, concerning the material matters, most traditional things should be supplanted by the modern ones, so as to keep up with the pace of our contemporary life. Imaging a person who is shopping in a supermarket, dressing the clothes of Middle Ages warriors, he or she must be considered as a lunatic or somebody who is putting up a fashioning show.

However, it's also unfair to separate the two concepts entirely, as there are lots of profound and complex mutual relationships which link them together.

First, the modernization derives from tradition. As history is a continual course, nothing can be isolated from its complex, let alone the tradition and modernization which have a consequent relation. This can be illustrated not only in the process of out culture, but also in the development of science and technology. When refer to the culture lever, numerous modern principle as well as festival are derived from our tradition, such as people's living style, eating habit, as well as their way of thinking. People from the East and the West sometimes see the same thing in different eyes, even in such a globalizing world, since they have succeeded different traditions, which can offer us an good illustration. On the scientific lever, the tradition can also server as a fundamental and practical method for the modern technology, as the factories have their previous form of mills and the modern skill may based on the traditional way of hand craft.

Secondly, while the tradition sustains the modernization, it’s also gains from the development of technology and science, for the latter have pay more and more attention to the former. For example, the modern technology of making dress can prevent the old form of sewing from extinction, since it enable the products a longer age, while the new skill of archeology can make the old history buildings more solid and durable.

What's more, the two of them even can transfer into each other. Take a look at human history, it's no rare to see that the modernization of yesterday has turned to be the tradition today, and it's the same with nowadays modernization, which might be considered as the tradition of tomorrow.

In a word, simply distinguishing the tradition with modernization is irrational, what should we do to face the possible contradiction of the two side is to weigh their value thoroughly them decide which to follow can which to abandon.
