208"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
========================
Can the external features of individuals shed light on their spiritual world? Can people get some knowledge of the idea of a society by analyzing the appearance and behavior of its people? In most cases, I would give positive answers to both of the questions above. But I also concede that there are some exceptions.
People's appearance and action can reflect their attitudes and interests in some extent, for the choice of clothes and the way people behave are largely affected or even determined by their attitude and interest. In everyday life, actually, it is through the appearance and action that people gradually get an idea about what kind of person each other might be. Although this method may fail sometimes, but since people have been using it and will still using it as an important way to evaluate others, we can conclude it may be an effective way rather than a futile one. There are numerous examples in our daily life to illustrate this. A pessimist usually looks dull and complains about almost everything; while, an optimist generally seems energetic and smiles towards hardship; a businessman usually dresses formally; while a farmer generally dresses more casually. In most cases, the appearance and action can reveal the attitude and interests of people.
Further, when people analyze the general appearance and behavior of a people, the idea and thought of their society can be revealed. People that grow up in the same society generally receive the same kind of education, immerse in the same Zeitgeist, and hold some similar values. The things above loom in the way they act and the way they dress. Trough the fragments of people's words actions and appearances, the spirit of a society may be figured out. One needs to look no further than the history of human to see it is true. In the ancient time the people tends to dress garishly and exaggeratedly. The Indians put long and colorful feathers on their head; some Asians wear heavy necklace decorated with silver and gem around their neck; and Africans usually paint strange tattoos on their faces and backs. On the contrary, nowadays, people generally prefer plain clothes, with little decoration. In the eye of some developmental psychologists, this kind of change reflects the profound change of the relationship between human being and nature. The flaring dressing manner of the ancient people implies their fear of the unpredictable nature. They wanted to exaggerate their strength by the dress and ornaments. But, in modern times, with the development of science and technology, people can skillfully utilize and change the nature to their favor. Their inner strength and confidence free them from exaggerated external decoration. This example tell us, the appearance of the people largely reveal the idea of the society.
Admittedly, sometimes people may fail to truly understand a person by merely observing his or her appearance and actions. There is a great many people dress poorly, but with an elegant soul, and as many people act strangely but with a gentle heart. Vincent Van Gogh, with ragged cloth and a bad temper, actually have a deeper devotion to life than most of his contemporaries. Einstein, who has been almost threw out of an international conference for his tattered clothes, is one of the greatest physicists in the world. Thus, people can clearly see, judging a person merely by appearance is sometimes misleading.
Similarly, in some society, the appearance and behavior of the people can not mirror the idea of the society. In some countries of the Islamic world, people are require to wear the some kind of cloth even act under strict rules. People can hardly tell what kind of thoughts hind inside their garments and unified behaviors.
All in all, generally, the dress and action can tell people the character and inclination of others, and the common behavior and appearance can reflect the idea of a society. However, there are exceptions, which remind us to take a second before drawing a hasty generalization of people and society merely by observing the external features. |
