The speaker contends that the greatness of individuals can only be identified by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries. However, in my view, if one can be called as a great man, the merit in himself cannot be changed no matter the transference of the place and time; the discrepancy is only due to the extent of development of one's society which determines that at what time we can find out and recognize such greatness.

Within a mature, sensible and advanced democratic society, people there have the well-developed insight into any realm of the culture, therefore, under such friendly circumstance, a man with valuable character can be identified easily. Take today's China for example, a brave person or a kindness person has been exalted immediately after the praisable decision or behavior made by him or her. Wu Tianxiang, a common worker in Wubei province, has helped thousands of farmers in the remote countryside to recognize words one by one. May be this cannot be a tremendous famous deed, however, his surprisingly persistence and resolution few people can be compared with. People in Wubei, even all over the china know such a common people with outstanding moral, of course accept him as a great individual. And we are the contemporary people of him, and the greatness of him has been decided by us. A great deal of the similar examples can be found in other areas or other countries nowadays.

Meanwhile, in the old days, things may be distinct different. This can only attribute to the feudal and the behind system of a community, or a society, even of a country. Numerous considered as famous persons today, were merely reluctantly accepted by people at the time when person alive, if not be rejected. Consider, Pasteur, the father of medical bacteria science, for example, was talked as nothing but a buffoon when he proposed that thousands of bacterium were being living on the surface of skin and relying on the nutrition of human body. At that time, nobody take his word seriously, and even make fool of him. However, today, if it was not for his discovery, we have no chance to live such an easy and healthy long life. The greatness of him were not identified by person contemporary, but for the permanent value of his discovery cannot be hide for a long time untill the technology and science reaches to a certain degree when can recognized such value, it has been decided as a greatness today.

Such negative influence of people contemporary can be found more in the field of arts throughout the history. Many intellect persons were ignored by the contemporary society, only after their death, more sensible society accompanying with more advanced information helped people around recognized them and their wonderful work. Such as the painting of Von Gogh, the architecture of Ephlite, the poets of Dickson, and so like.

In sum, the greatness of individuals can be decided in a more scientific advanced world for it is always a more abstruse for people accept soon. People are always used to that only when we see the benefits it bring to us, can we decide whether it is great, while having nothing to do with the people who live after them, or their contemporaries.

可能我看得不对 但我觉得你这篇文的定位有问题 制度是原因之一 但不是所有的原因 而且讨论过程中没有涉及到制度问题 起码不够有力 例子没有很好的支持观点 一家之言 看看别人的看法 也许我的看法有点偏颇
