------题目------
Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.
------正文------
By citing the fact that men faint more than women when visiting the dentist, the argument concludes that men are more distressed about having dental work done, therefore targeting the male consumer and emphasis on the anesthetic techniques and sensitivity of the staff will help the male consumer and attract more consumer. It seems somewhat reasonable. However the argument is weakened by a series of logical flaws, which render it unconvincing.

To begin with, we should query the reliability of the statistic about “three times". How the data is made? Is the survey enough broad? The argument says nothing about the role of the men. Are the men the patients or the ones who accompany their girlfriend? The argument also doesn't show the age bracket of the patients.

Even if the data is precise, the data doesn't mean that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women. The argument fails to consider other alternative reasons for the men's faint. It is entirely possible that most of the men have more serious pain on his tooth than the women. The pain rather than the dentist makes them faint. It is also possible that that majority of these men in the data are children who were first to visit the dentist, while the number of the women visiting the dentist is much more than the men.  Understandingly, they fear about the dental work because they don't what will happen to them.

Nor the argument justify that dentist should target the male consumer even thought the men consumer indeed distressed about the dental work. The argument provides no evidence about the number of the male consumer. It is likely that the male consumer makes up a small percentage of the total number of consumer. If so, it is no use targeting the male consumers in order to attract more consumers.

Finally, the argument assume that the male consumer will less faint and less distressed about the dental work and therefore more consumer will come to the dentist if they emphasize both the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of the staff to nervous or suffering patients. Yet it is unwarranted. In the argument, no survey or data indicate that good anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of the staff will increase the attractiveness of the dentist. Perhaps most the consumers never fear about the pain. Or perhaps the anesthetic techniques of the dentist is good enough and don't need to improve. It seem to more reasonable to focus the effort on the quality of the dentist's work which might be most important factor for the consumers rather than other respects.

To sum up, before any decision aimed at increasing the consumers is made, more though investigation to gather the insufficient data to relocate the real cause of men who faint is more helpful. To strengthen the argument, the argument should provide the clear data about the percentage and age bracket of all the consumers. Also we should know more data to prove that the emphasis on the anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff is useful on attracting more consumers.
