The greatness of individuals is always proved by time, so in my opinion, if the man's contribution quickly produces desired result, his greatness can be acknowledged by contemporaries. Otherwise, if the peers exclude the man’s great idea, his greatness would be acknowledged only by the people who live after him. I will clarify my stand as follows.

In one period, there are many famous people who can contribute to their society and what they have done is the greatness which can be decided by their contemporaries. They often bring a lot of profits for all the country even for the overall human immediately. For instance, Bill Gates is the greatest man in the field of IT because of his greatness that Microsoft Company lets the computer become popular and gives us a lot of benefits in our daily life, so he is the person whose greatness is decided by his contemporaries. Another example, Mrs. Curie found the new element named radium which can be used in the treatment of some diseases.  Actually, this contribution was regarded to be positive by her contemporaries, so her greatness can be admired and that is the reason why she can get the Nobel Prize of chemistry. In short, a people who can show his ability or his idea can make a huge advantage in a short time can be defined as a great man by his contemporaries.

However, not all the great men are so fortunate that they can be understood by their peers. As we know, the nature is fair to everyone, so the greatness of a person will be confirmed finally by the time no matter long or short. As an example, the author’s government forbade the “Dream Of The Red Chamber”, but after several years, the offspring judged the book as a famous work. The famous artist Van Gogh was very poor when he was live, and nobody wanted to buy his pictures that were sold in the price of million thousand pounds latter days. And many scientists’ great idea was excluded by the main wrong idea in their period, some of them even contribute their life for protecting the truth of science, but at last they were praised for their greatness by the people who live after them. In conclusion, as an old saying that "Genuine gold fears no fire; truth fears no refutation", the greatness of individuals, which need a long time to provide its benefits for us to persuade people and entirely to exhibit its essences to the world, can only be decided by the people who live after them.

To sum up, time is the real necessary condition to decide the greatness of a person. When the person can give the enough evidences in short time to convince others to believe his great idea or enjoy his great work, he will be a famous man in his peer time. Or else, if he needs a long time, his greatness can only be decided by those offspring.
