People work more productively in teams than individually. Teamwork requires cooperation, which motivates people much more than individual competition does.

The issue of how to work more productively never ceases public attention and debating. The speaker seems to hold that teamwork is the better choice, owing to the merit of cooperation it requires, which the speaker believes can motivate people much more than individual competition does. I agree that in certain fields teamwork does excel; in other fields, however, it might not be the case.

To begin with, cooperation is vital in the realm of scientific discovery and thus teamwork works better here. Discovery means the objective reality has already been there and waiting for human beings to be aware of, which will not be seriously influenced by personal characters of discoverers and can be accomplished by co-endeavors from different individuals. The cumulative progress in science, from Newton’s mechanics to Einstein’s theory of relativity, is just an illustration of the nature of scientific discovery. In our era, however, academic disciplines have been developing so rapidly and thoroughly and the problems confronting us are so complicated that a single individual can hardly be capable to achieve the goal. Take the Apollo Project for example. In order to discover the mystery of the moon, geologists, cosmologist, biologists, astronauts, computer engineers, etc., have to cooperate with each other in the project, while no individual could possibly possess all knowledge and technologies needed. In the course of group working, each specialist can dive into one specific area he or she is expert at, and bring his or her professional suggestion into the group, and the contributions from each member finally make up the whole giant program. Individual way of working, on the contrary, drives one to every problem a project might include, which will highly possibly leave a complex project flaws in some concrete aspects, or even fail. Therefore, teamwork is obviously more productive in scientific discovery.

In the creative areas, such as arts, literature, philosophy, etc., however, individual might work more productively than teamwork. Contra discovery, these areas more rely on one's personal creativity, while group working cannot be competence. Without Newton, human being may have established mechanics as well, though it would have taken much longer; without Da Vinci, Shakespeare, Rousseau, Yets, however, human races might have lost their masterpieces forever. If Shakespeare were not born, for example, even tens of litterateurs working together, they will not finish Merchant of Venice or Hamlet. It will not be better as well if Shakespeare and Dickens could work together, for their characters and talent are so different, cooperating might damage their own creativity.   Since personal characters, unique life experience, incomparable talents, etc., weigh more heavily than the ability of cooperation, individual in this realm can work more productively than work in groups.

In sum, it is too hasty to hold that working in teams is better than individually. Due to the distinct nature of different realms, while people need to cooperate with each other in scientific research, in creative fields they need more personal space to be more productive.                         494 words
