The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.
'For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system.'

In this argument, the arguer fails to give enough evidence to show that it is due to Mr. Schade's leadership that Steel City High gains the assumed improvement in its musical education. And the arguer further groundlessly concludes Mr. Schade's supposed success will be repeated if he is assigned to plan and direct the music education program for Saluda.

Firstly, the arguer provides no information the victories of Steel City High in the regional band competitions are due to the effort of Mr. Schade. Maybe during the past three years a host of students who are gifted in music joined Steel City High's band, thus, greatly improved the quality of the bands performance. And it is equally possible that in recent three years, the high school which has always won the competition did not take part in the regional band competition. And it is their absence gives a chance to Steel City High who used to take the second place. It is also probably that Mr. Schade have good personal relationship with the people who in charge of evaluating the bands. And the Steel City High's victories are actually unfair. Without precluding the situations above, the arguer can not make me believe Mr. Schade is an effective music director and it is him who leads the Steel High won the competition.

Secondly, musical instruments and rehearsal facilities are only a aspect, we can not fully evaluate the condition of Steel City High’s musical education solely by them. It is true, good instruments and facilities can give some advantages to the students and the teachers. But merely advanced equipment and facilities cannot promise a successful musical education. The arguer did not mention the qualities of the musical teachers, the text books the students are using, and the whether the students are interested in music class. And all those I mentioned above are also criteria to evaluate the quality of musical education. Maybe during the period Mr. Schade is working as music director, many adequate music teachers left Steel City High. And maybe the Steel City High is still using some out-of-date text books, which make the students feel bored about the musical classes. In These cases, we can not say that Mr. Schade is a good music director.

Thirdly, even if Mr. Schade is effective as a music director of Steel City High, it does not follow that he will be a efficient in planning and direction the general musical education program for the entire Saluda school system. He may fails to direct correctly due to lacking of experience.

All in all, the argument is not cogent as it stands.  Before Saluda people finally decided on whether to hire Mr. Schade to arrange the musical education for their children, further consideration should be took.
