Argument 34
Milk and dairy products are rich in vitamin D and calcium, substances essential for building and maintaining bones. Many people therefore believe that a diet rich in dairy products can help prevent osteoporosis, a disease in which the bones weaken significantly with age and that is linked to both environmental and genetic factors. But a long-term study of a large number of people has found that those who have consistently consumed dairy products throughout the years of the study have a higher rate of bone fractures than any other participants in the study. Since bone fractures are a symptom of osteoporosis, this study result shows that a diet rich in dairy products may actually increase, rather than decrease, the risk of osteoporosis

In the argument, the author concludes the former idea that says a diet rich in dairy products can help prevent osteoporosis is wrong, on the contrary, it would increase the risk of osteoporosis. To substantiate his conclusion, the author cited a survey which resulted that diets with dairy products had increase the rate of bone fractures that are a symptom of osteoporosis. After close scrutiny, the evidence cited are all vulnerable that cannot lend any strong support to the conclusion.
First of all, the only evidence cited is the survey; however, it is problematic in itself. The author did not tell us whether the process of the survey is scientific and had been accepted by authorities. Moreover, the author only gives us two vague statistics: a long-term and a large number of people. How many years? What is the exact numbers? Without clear statistics, the author cannot consider the survey's period of time is long enough and samples are large enough for such a complex survey. Additionally, the author fails to give us information about whether the environment samples in are similar. Therefore, the survey which the argument only based on is incredible, and the whole argument is groundless.
Second, even if the survey is credible, there are also many problems in the following argument. The idea believed before is that a diet rich in dairy products can help prevent osteoporosis, while the content of the survey cited only show that people have consistently consumed dairy products throughout years. Maybe, those people only eat small amount of dairy products everyday, or only eat several times during a months. The evidence fails to tell us how much and how often they ate in the past years. The reason for higher rate of bone fractures due to them did not eat enough not because that they eat.
Last but not least, the author make sure that higher rate of bone fractures would surely result in osteoporosis depends on that bone fractures are a symptom of osteoporosis, while the author ignores the condition of osteoporosis, which includes aging, environment and genetic factors. Without any credible evidence the author cannot concludes that only higher rate of bone fractures would contribute to osteoporosis. It is entirely possible that because of difference in environment and genetic factors, those who have higher rate of bone fractures would not have osteoporosis.
To sum up, the author's conclusion that diets rich in dairy products would result in osteoporosis is not well supported by this argument. To convince me, the author should give more credible and authentic evidence, especially some clinical experiments that are accepted by scientific authorities.
