------题目------
The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
------正文------
The speaker contends that the people's attitudes and interests can be reflected by the way they look, dress and act. Then, can we learn something about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people? I'm afraid I do not agree with the speaker. In my point of view, although the appearance and behavior can indicate some facts about the certain people, we can hardly judge the attitudes and interests of people through their action and dress as well as ideas and values of a society.
First of all, it is difficult for us to estimate the attitudes and interests of people via their action or appearance. If we intend to understand people's attitudes, we should communicate with them and they must express their true ideas and opinions. Or what we see is still the superficial phenomena, not the inner side. For example, if one suddenly visits one of his friends without reminding him previously, his friend usually treat him warmly owing to the politeness. Yet, the inner view of his friend may be not as pleasant as what he behaves because one disturbs his original arrangement. If people do not tell us their ideas in their hearts, it is truly hard for us to know about them. Moreover, to judge one's interest is the same difficulty as the attitude does. One's interest often depends on his personality, family background and economic status. If someone rare or never eats seafood, many of us may consider he dislike them. However, actually, he is sensitive to the seafood or maybe it is too luxury for him to afford spend his money on seafoods. Due to some objective reasons, he cannot eat seafood though loving them. Thus, to judge people's attitudes and interests accurately is hard for us, if they do not express and behave their truly.
Furthermore, since it is difficult for us to comprehend one's attitude and interest, it is harder to realize the values and ideas of a society. A society's ideas and values is often up to the history, traditions and customs, and education background. Thereby, if we want to tell something about a community's ideas or values, we should firstly know something about their history background and traditions. In India, for instance, if one shakes his head, he means agree while in many other countries, on contrary, it means disagree. If we do not know this tradition, we possibly meet some troubles when communicating with Indians. What is more, a Chinese and American both love dress Nike’s cloths and have a meal in McDonald’s, but their ideas and values are not equal. The Chinese believes the socialism while the American trusts capitalism. Also, nowadays globalization is in progress around world. Many things including people's behavior and appearance have a trend of conformity. In companies, employees usually are order to dress in suit when in companies. Their traditional clothes or fashionable ones are not permitted when in office. We cannot conclude any social ideas and values via this, because almost the world is the same. Hence, nowadays, appearance and behavior of people can hardly reflect the social ideas and values.
Admittedly, to some extent, we do can know something. For example, in China, all the family members together have a rich dinner and play fireworks to celebrate the Spring Festival. While in many western countries people often eat turkeys with families and decorate Christmas trees in Christmas Eve. Children always receive nice gifts from Santa Claus. From these, we do can understand something about social idea of happiness and enjoyment and value of the importance of family. However, these situations appear generally in certain countries, so we learn something from them. If it is an individual action or outer look, it is truly hard to say so.
To sum up, although I do not deny we can learn something true from the people's behavior and appearance of a society, it is difficult for us to judge others' interests and attitudes if they are unwilling to express their inner opinions. Moreover, their action and appearance can harder reflect their society's ideas and values. |
