Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them.

Are tradition and modernization incompatible and we have to choose only one of them just as outlined in the above statement? As far as I concern, I fundamentally disagree with this view. On the contrary, I hold the opinion that tradition and modernization are compatible most of the time as illustrated by the following discussions.

Firstly, we can find that tradition and modernization are compatible in our common daily affairs. Taking the moral area for example, honesty, integrity, respect to old people and give a hand to the people in trouble are all considered as virtues according to our tradition. In today's society, the situation around us are changing all the time and much faster than ever before, people become more concerned about their interests and profits. But all the virtues above are still considered as good elements today and are placed on great emphasis.  In the pursuit of interests and profits, we should also hold these virtues. If we only choose the interests and give out the important virtues, we will lose the confidence of others and cause damage to ourselves eventually. As for this, we can see that tradition and modernization are compatible.

Another field can also support my point of view involves education. Along with the improvement of science and technology, the way we learning has been great different from earlier times. Thanks to the global use of internet, computer, video camera and other advanced techniques, we have owned much more modern ways to gain information. As for this case, does the traditional way of learning become unuseful and should be replaced by the advanced methods? Such as replacing reading from books with reading from computer, listening classes in the classroom with watching from the TV.  The answer to this question is certainly "no" for the reason that both the traditional and modern ways have their advantages over the other. We can read books alone and go into the inner world of the authors; we can also communicate with our teachers in the classroom. On the other hand, the Internet and computer provide us a new way to collect information quickly and easily; the videotape permits us to watch several times. In a word, we can make the best use of both of the traditional and modern ways in education to better satisfy our demand.

Admittedly, there are some cases that tradition and modernization are incompatible. Since much tradition came into being according to the temporary situations of the society, it is clear that some maybe out of date today. A case in point is that there is a tradition of forbidding women to go to school to receive education in some countries.  This tradition obviously is incompatible with the modern society for everyone in the world should have the equal rights including receiving education. When it comes to these cases, we should choose the way fitting for the new conditions today. However, we should also have to admit that these cases are too few to indicate all tradition and modernization are incompatible.

To sum up, considering all the aspects discussed above, we can draw the conclusion that the incompatible situation of tradition and modernization is very, very rare; on the opposite side, they are compatible, even help to enhance the other most of the time.
