So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.

The statement above conceals in interesting conclusion that history offers little use to our present society. In my observation, however, history benefits us by not only providing a general guidance to solution of many problems, but also contributing to the success and happiness of the individual's life and career.

Admittedly, with the unprecedented pace of development of the contemporary society, what we are confronted today are often different from the past, through which we cannot learn a direct solution. Today we have created numerous new inventions that our ancestors could never imagine: the fast communication equipments, the efficient traffic tools,  and adorable entertainment facilities. And yet we also meet countless problems that have never bothered our ancestors before: the nuclear wars, the negative impact from globalization and the internet crime etc. Along with the convenience the modern technology has brought, we are also suffering from the negative consequences. Since in history those things and issues have never existed, there is no ready answer we can follow.

However, we can find trace of many of the present problems in the history and a study of them would give us some clue in finding out the right solution. Many of the issues like war, pollution and the income gap have been harassing human race ever since its existence. Though they have taken a new shape and upgraded in the modern society, there is something everlasting there to borrow lessons from. Take the issue of war for an instance. There is always new wars and riots breaking out somewhere in the world. Though each of them bears new causes, a study of the countless wars in history would help us better understand the nature, the types of the wars, the strategies the participants are using and the political, economical and psychological influences of respective wars of wars would exert on the society. A sound understanding of that would make people more realize the cruelness of wars and sort our the most efficient ways to avoid it before it breaks out and end it when unfortunately it happens.


History also benefits the individuals' life in the aspect that we can always learn from those ahead of us to lead us to live a more successful life. Though so diverse, many of us bear a lot of similarities along the path of growth. Love and hate, success and failure, happiness and sorrow are universal even though they reflect in various ways. When we fall into situations hard to get over, the past is always there ready to offer advice: we can find lessons from what we have experienced before; we can read books of those celebrities to see how they conquer; we can talk with those around us to see what they have done in similar circumstances. In addition, in our school and career life, cases of the past help us to orientate our goals, work out strategic plans and constantly employ the former experiences to check if we are on the right track. Like when we are preparing a certain exam we have never taken before, it is always a good way to refer to the experiences and lessons of those who have participated in.

The society is advancing even faster than ever and so many things keep changing all the time. But history repeats itself; if we human beings fail to explore the history to draw the merits and lessons, we would probably repeat the wrongs of the past and never progress as fast as we should be.

这个思路要打开一下，别最后都是一个例子了。比如战后德国对犹太人的态度问题，比如现在的中东问题，比如印度和巴基斯坦关系问题，比如大陆和台湾的问题。。。
