According to our daily experience, the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. Similarly, we can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. Considered as a integral part of the society, populace play a overwhelming role in the society's development and at the same time, civilian are influenced by their living environment--the society. So, by judging the way populace dress and act, we can learn much about the society.

To begin with, when evaluating a person passing by, most people choose his or her clothes as the most direct and effect element. Ever since human come into being, they are eager to learn the unknown world promoted by their curiosity. Observing the way people dress becomes a channel to judge others especially the strangers thereby satisfying their curiosity. In some special occasions, people's appearance also attracts our attention. For instance, first impression plays a significant role in the interview. A good looking person may get a chance easier then the one who does not pay attention to his or her appearance. As a result, in China, most graduates invest too much money in their interviewing clothes, and some of them even borrow money from their friend for such expensive dress regardless of the risk of getting into debt. Moreover, the ways people dress also illustrate the society's ideas and values. The popularity of jeans and T-shirt reflects our admiration about free life and the expression of personality. Since China-Tang dress was designated as the uniform of APEC meeting in 2002, China-Tang dress becomes the most fashion clothes all over the world. China-Tang dress is not only a conventional dress in China but also the extension of Chinese culture. This fashion current reveals that more and more people in the world begin to care the development of China and the charm of Chinese traditional culture.

On the second place, the behavior of people originates part from their reaction of their living experience, comprehension of the society and culture. Observing the way people act, therefore, can tell much about a society's ideas and values. In western world, since the standard of value of its people is the realization of people's value, the senior citizens are considered as the burden; while in some eastern countries, elder holds the major power of a family and the civilian treat them politely, because their culture indicate that the wisdom of people increases with the increase of their age, then indisputably elder is bright and is worthy of the reverence of others. Civilian’s act about how to treat elders from the small places such as family, community from the whole country are nearly accordant and can reveal their attitude in both western world and eastern countries.

Admittedly, only judging people’s appearance and behavior is not enough to understand a society thoroughly. Learning the history and culture of the nation is helpful to tell about a society’s ideas and values inside out. Let’s still take the example of China-Tang dress, people would not tell China-Tang dress is one kind of Chinese traditional dress unless they know the existent of a brilliant dynasty-Tang dynasty.

To sum up, the way people dress and act indicate their attitudes and interests then reveals a society’s ideas and values. However, without the basic knowledge of a nation’s history and culture, we can hardly understand a society thoroughly and may even make mistake.
