In our time when efficiency is highly valued, pragmatic behavior is both necessary and crucial in realms such as academia and politics. Take historians for example. What is more, our developed technology has recorded almost every big event happened on this planet, allowing little room for historians to interpret the past with any idealistic views. When historians are more and more reduced to translators of historical records, pragmatic behavior, other than idealistic views, is more significant. Anyhow, the importance of practical way is not only limited to the study of history, but to many other mainstream inquires as well. Physics, social science, humanities are all teeming with information; many existed problems cannot be solved unless people rely on them for analysis. When it comes to politics, what is most urgent is to ensure that most members in a society can pay for their bread and rent. In light of this, no matter how complex and perplexed a policy may sound, eventually it is supposed to solve these problems, which also calls for practical approaches.

Nevertheless, pragmatic behavior can not bring us long-term success, with idealistic views are absent. When the formal Soviet Union rivaled the United States in the famous "Star War Defense Initiative ", this expensive arm race worsened the economy of the Soviet Union and finally led to the collapse of the economic situation nationwide years later. At the earlier time period, Deng Xiaoping advocated “Open up Policy”, emphasizing the importance of cross national communication and commerce. Though faced with many objections and abuses, this policy had finally proven to considerably promote the economy of China in 1980’s. The contrasting examples show us that idealistic views usually rend their merit in the future, as did of “Open up Policy”, and narrowing the focus to the present issues, illustrated by the collapse of the Soviet Union’s economy, will bring us negative and disastrous result.

In conclusion, it is presumptuous to judge practical way as the only approach to success, since in long-term achievement idealistic views always play a part and parcel role. However, this is not to say pragmatic behavior is not as important, for in academic and political realms, they help us deal with the available information and existed problems.
