While some leaders in government, sports, industry, and other areas attribute their success to a well-developed sense of competition, a society can better prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation.

Nowadays, consistently hot debates arise from the gap between competition and cooperation. Although competition has its merits in respect of impel people to be initiative and hard working, a sense of cooperation is more important in the fields of politics, science and sports indeed.

To begin with, cooperation is paramount in the current globalizing world. As a government leader, a sense of cooperation is necessary when considering pressing social problems that cannot be confined within one nation’s boundary. For instance, facing the threat of nuclear war, all national governments should participate in eliminating weapons of mass destruction; global environmental problems such as ozone damage and greenhouse effect alarm us to reduce emission of harmful elements; the internet crime and prevent our children from obscene materials on websites force us to regulate the internet rules in an collaborative effort. If young people are not aware of these common issues that confront us, and a sense of cooperation has not been fostered, it might be quite possible that the whole earth will experience much suffering due to our neglect of cooperation.

Secondly, in the realm of scientific research, cooperation plays a vital role in most disciplines among scholars. Owning to our accumulated knowledge, most scientists come to recognize that confining certain subjects to a single discipline is unwise, and no question could be answered thoroughly by a single specialist. Philosophically speaking, no problem is isolated, and in order to fully understand it, disciplines related to the problem should be involved in. As the present trend shows, interdisciplinary scientific researches loom so large in the academic world. Take archaeology for instance. Long gone are the days when historical sites are excavated by archaeologists who are mainly good at digging alone. In modern days, every archaeological team not only includes traditional archaeologists, but also zoologists, cultural anthropologists, physicists, chemists, computer experts and even mechanical engineers for the purpose of acquiring information about ancient civilization as much as possible from artifacts and other remains. This case reveals that cooperation among scientists is needed for them to further their researches.

Moreover, in the field of sports, cooperation is obviously fatal in games like football and basketball, etc. On a football pitch, it is granted that no single football player, no matter how talent he or she is, can fight against another entire team composed of 11 people. As a captain, the first priority is to keep the whole team as a union; make sure that the team is organized effectively through members' collaboration, and finally direct all members' strength toward the solitary goal:  win. Only in this way, can a football team success in most cases.

In conclusion, as the examples above illustrate, to be an effective leader in fields such as politics, science research and sports, cooperation is indispensable.

我觉得这道题用全面的观点比较好说。一方面合作必不可少，另一方面竞争意识又不能没有，这样体育、经济、政治领域都很容易举出例子。
