Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions.

As the trend of society and culture fluxes and ebbs with its specific periodicity and yet processed at its accelerating and eternal space, more and more people are paying attention to the past, the authenticity of the past. More precisely, are facts stubborn? Can they be altered by subjective elements? A part of population reply "yes" to the question, while another part declare "no", and still others simply keep silent. Concerning science and technology as well as history and humanity, it seems a correct choice to articulate definitely "NO".

To approach the dilemma without ambiguity, what should be explored first is the meaning of "fact". Substantially, the term "fact" means all things done, that it to say, the connotation and denotation of "fact" is so broad that any events occurred in the past are included in the category, ranging from such small incidents as the breakfast yesterday and a dog's smile last week, to such great events as the foundation of the USA and the Cultural Revolution in China. Emphatically, an occurrence, no matter whether any individual has experienced it or not, is fact as long as it did exist.

Then the answer seems explicit that facts could not be altered or changed by any forces after its happening. Unless the future science would show human approaches to get access to the past, nothing could human beings do to vary the already fixed facts.

Admittedly, "definite" occurrences usually have diverse or divergent versions in different times, in different human mouths, enveloping a veil of mobility around fact. What can and must be argued about this phenomenon is that what make sense in such situations are human observation, interpretation, description and expectation, instead of the stubborn fact per se. Fact is unique. In a football match, whether the ball is outside the borderline or whether a certain athlete's hands touch the ball seems to be controversial for a period of time, even still under question after the match; when a traffic accident happen, whether the automobile has run the red light, or whether the pedestrian disobey certain sorts of traffic rules suffers from arguments for a much longer episode than the accident itself. Though superficially subjective with the answers depending on individuals' senses of vision, hearing and touching, and even memory (of the witnesses) as well, facts are immobile, calling for necessity to ascertain them. If facts are of amorphous, why comes the invention and utilization of equipment like video and camera? What actually attribute to the unlike versions are persons' observation from certain viewpoints, expectation on the favorable football teams or loves ones in accidents, interpretation by mental structure and objective rules, as well as description based on the elements all above and occasionally deliberate bias. Therefore human wishes, inclinations, or the dictates of passions imposes effect on facts' appearances, the subjective exteriors, without influence to the substance, which is exactly the reason why human beings often feel regretful about certain things they have done yet without the "medicine for regret".

Only under one circumstance can "facts" be altered or changed, when facts are still in the process or has not taken place yet. There are people predicting their destinies by superstitious methods and then managing to do things at the goal of changing them, which, to tell the truth, has nothing to do with the immobility of fact, considering the quality of unhappening of prediction.

As a conclusion, fact is unique; even in the course of contemporary, nothing can fulfill the job of changing facts just as nobody can make the dead survive again.
