Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

When it comes to discussing the value of scandal, I generally concede that scandal can be regarded as useful in respect that it serves as a more powerful tool in attracting people's attention. However, putting to much emphasis on scandal would cause negative outcomes.

To begin with, scandal is more effective to call public attention in contrast with speakers or reformers. Two main reasons account for this. In the first place, people are inclined to seek unusual things such as scandal psychologically. In modern days, most people get bored from daily routines. Unusual events like scandal actually help them get their minds out of dreary regulated schedules, and provide them with a sense of refresh. In the second place, for the sake of business profits, mass media agents always use scandal as bait to entice more audiences and readers. In extreme cases, mass media companies employ many a few people to collect scandals as their exclusive jobs. According to the two reasons figured out above, we don't have to make a big fuss over scandal's power in drawing public attention.

However, apart form its powerful attraction, scandal equally acts as a detrimental force which severely damages public images of individuals and organizations involved in it. In politics, being put in the center of scandals, politicians or governments will surely lose their credibility and accountability among citizens. For instance, right after the Watergate scandal, a deep sense of disillusionment of so-called "imperial presidency" was produced. This erosion of public confidence which resulted from the scandal greatly challenged Nixon's successors to restore credibility and respect for government. In academia, scandals such as plagiarism not only bring scholars into disrepute, but also disgrace the fundamental academic spirit that is defended and accumulated by past great scholars.

In addition, scandal also turns out to be negative for the reason that it distracts the society from more pressing problems. As scandals climb up to the headlines, they absorb major part of people's consideration, and other social problems are neglected at the same time. For instance, as the sex scandal of former U.S. President Bill Clinton pervade all over the northern American continent, people's attention are mainly directed to concern political morality. However, more important issues such as the public safety threatened by terrorist attacks, the health care reform, the affirmative action to support less competitive groups, the ever-increasing city crime rate, etc. are ignored to some extent. As the scandal quiet down, these problems were also left for all Americans.

In sum, although scandal has an unsurpassable power in attracting people's attention, it usually plays a passive role by diminishing the reputation and credibility of individuals and organizations involved in them, and distracting the social conscience away from problems which are more worthy to notice.
