The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history.

History has brought us many benefits. It gives us many experience, many techniques and many caveats. Therefore, we can learn much from history which has overthrew the idea that people in different period of time are significantly different.

Admittedly, people in different period of time may behavior different. They have distinguished technology, life style and tastes for arts. How were ancient people thinking when you are using a computer to surf in the internet? What were their feelings when you are transmitting some information from taxes and telephone? How can they believe washing clothes, clearing dishes and putting up the houses can be done in the same time by the help of washing machines? All of these can not be finished in ancient times so efficiently. Ostensibly, the development of history has made our life extremly different.

However, there are also some essential aspects which are still unchanged all the time. Such as ethics, customs and habits which is relatively eternal. Most people nowadays still sublime some ethics such as honesty, modesty and bravery. Because these ethics are still useful and helpful in molding a well-round personality which is still significant in the modern world, persons who losses the fundamental ethics are bound to lose in the competition. A political leader will fall down when he is disclosed to betray his people; a businessman will suffer bankrupt when he is revealed to sell fake products; a scientist will be condemned when he researches something which can threaten our life such as clone and nuclear bomb. Therefore, there are some common principles that we and the ancient people must observe to all together.

Moreover, some culture and customs are not changed, either. For example, the traditional festival " The Spring Festival" has stilled been the most thriving festival in China after several thousand years; the noodles and rice are still the staple in China during several decade dynasties; the spirits of modest and hospitality are still a virtue everyone appreciates after experiencing so much frustration and success in China. Maybe some culture, some customs have lost in the long history, but there are a lot of essence and elites retained and developed.

In addition, there are some ancient works which can still have their function today. For example," the Law of War” written by Sun wu who is one of the most famous martialists in China can instruct many modern campaigns. The novel "the old man and the Sea" has incited many people all over the world. The pictures "sunrise" made by Monet can be appreciated and shared by many people today. Every thing may have some eternal values in history, no one can say something is purely transient. Once it exists, it will retain some merits to the history no matter how common it is. Just as a famous poet has said "we can not see a bird in the sky, but it has already flown.” Therefore, we really have many commons with the ancient people when understanding or appreciating something.

Not until people realize we have no essential difference, can they be wiser and smarter in dealing with the modern affairs, because they have known not only can they study from the knowledge taught by the contemporaries, but also they can absorb experience from the ancient affairs because there are many similarities between ancient people and modern people which is a chief benefit history study has brought us.
