Nonstream areas of inquiry played an important role in the long history. Today it also makes some function by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science although the significance and influence of nonstream areas are becoming less and less. Moreover, we can not ignore the negative effect of them.

In the past, nonstream areas played an important role by satisfying human’ needs because they could not understand some events in a scientific manner. For example, ancient people regarded the natural calamity as God’ rage just like the drought, spate, earthquake and wild wind. They imagined a paranormal power which can help them explain their doubt and curiosity. When they were ill, they could not turn to doctors for help because the medicine technology was not developed well at that time. In order to seek for a panacea which can cure the disease, people may turn help to witches who give them intense hint and sometimes just the hint was effective for either coincidence or some unknown explanation. Moreover, nonstream areas can console people in imagining some ghosts and another blithe world. When people’s friends or lineal relatives died,  the ideology that they had gone to another world happily could give them great comfort and alleviate their grief, to some extent. Therefore, the nonstream area is a mean area filling with people’s daily life in the past.

Nowadays, they also make sense in some circumstance. The typical situation is when people can not make an alternative between the two aspects, they often throw a coin to decide. Because sometimes, we can not explain all our doubts by scientific knowledge, the nonstream areas can act as a substitute. When people are in bad moods, how they hope everything can go well from now on, so they believe in the astrology which can predict his future in a nonstream way. Of course, no one can substantiate its effectiveness. However, many people are incited by the hopeful words written on their own astrology. Actually, the nonstream areas have satisfied us with our psylogical needs which can not be pleased by stream areas in the modern world.

Nonstream areas are also an offset of the stream areas. On the one hand, many science are deduced from the nonstream areas just as astronomy derives from the astrology. On the other hand, nonstream areas sometimes fill up a vacancy of stream areas. No one can explain the arcane effect of the nonsteam power. For example, during the therapy of cancers, the impression of different can result different consequences. Hypnotism has caused the depressed people to recall their lives. Therefore, the nonstream areas have played an indispensable supplement to stream areas.  

However, there are some negative function they have resulted in. Not only many of the nonstream methods can result in a counterproductive consequence for the unscientific or anti-scientific theory, but also they can be a tool for enthralling our ideas and suppressing our thought by the dominance. They make a feint that the indigent people must endure their indigence in order to acquire the eternal well-being in another world after their death. Because no one can validate the rignteness of these ideas, the nonstream areas may sometimes make people gullible or produce some fictional ideas which lead to their blindfold fantasies and self-righteousness, intolerance or anti-social behavior when people confront with the society and reality. Just as some illegal organizations bring astonishing disasters to many people by pandering people disentangle the present world. Therefore, people must resist the negative influence the nonstream areas have brought.

Significantly, the tendency at present is a high increasing advocate for stream areas and a decreasing enthusiasm in the nonstream areas. Because the science is improved more and more and people have solved many doubts by some reasonable, scientific explanations. Therefore, fewer people have been trapped in their psychological problems and turn to some nonstream areas of inquiry for help.

In sum, the nonstream areas of inquiry has played an important role in the past, and it can not retreat the stage of history in a short period. However, the status of nonstream areas is decreasing and the nonstream areas have been a necessary offset to stream areas though we have to concede they have also some potential threat to the society.
