argument 9.
The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.

"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."

15年前,Omega大学实施了一项新措施,鼓励学生对所有教授的教学效果进行评价。从那以后,Omega的教授开始给予学生更高的分数,Omega的学生成绩总平均上升了30%。未来的雇主显然认为Omega的分数贬值了;这可以解释为什么Omega的毕业生找工作时没有邻近的Alpha大学毕业生成功。为使Omega毕业生找到好工作,我们应立即停止学生对教授的评价。


[分析]
评价 --> 高分 --> 分数贬值 --> 难找工作
1)给学生更高分数的原因是什么,可能是因为要接受学生的评价,教授的教学质量提高了,或者是学生的学习热情提高了,从而学生的平均总成绩上升了。即没有全面分析这项评价的正负面影响。
2)什么证据可以表明雇主认为分数贬值?没有调查。况且15年的时间那么长,社会情况变化。
3)找工作难的原因不能简单归因于分数贬值,而且不能由于没有邻近的成功就推断是找不到好工作。没是信息表明以前是比邻近的学校好。

In this memorandum the dean recommends that Omega University should immediately terminate the student evaluation of professors, in order to enable graduates to secure better jobs. While this argument seems somewhat specific and plausible at first glance, close inspection would reveal it fraught with vague, oversimplified and unwarranted claims in several aspects.

To begin with, the argument is not convincing due to its assumption that overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent just because implemented the procedure that encouraged students to evaluate professors. Obviously, the arguer fails to take into account other possible reasons. Perhaps the teaching effectiveness actually get improvement ascribe to the evaluation, or maybe students’ enthusiasm of learning be promoted. Without comprehensive analyses of the procedure, it is too simply to draw this conclusion. It also might be the case that, Omega greatly benefited from the procedure rather than other negative influence.

In addition, there are not evidences to show that potential employers deem the grades at Omega are inflated. Moreover, social conception about the grades has transformed undoubtedly through last fifteen years. Then we can not consider the inflated grades as a primary inducement of problems concerning getting jobs.

Another problem that undermines the argument is that Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University due to inflated grades, and that does not mean the Omega graduates could not find satisfied jobs. To enable Omega graduates to secure better jobs, the arguer ought to demonstrate more specifics of Omega graduates’ employment, as well as the nearby universities. The arguer commits a fallacy of neglecting other relevant possibilities, a myriad of other factors, including that Alpha is an outstanding university but Omega is just commonplace one, might just as likely be the cause of the difference. Any of these scenarios, if true, would cast considerable doubt on the argument’s conclusion that Omega need to help its graduates to obtain better employment with the termination of student evaluation.

In sum, it would be necessary for the dean to resolve all the above-mentioned fallacies because the evidence cited in these analyses do not logically support what he maintains. To bolster his conclusion, he takes into account other effects of this evaluation procedure, further information of graduates’ employment and so forth.

the arguer 一直试图说明分数对就业的影响。我们可以看出分数对就业是有一定影响,但是我们更清楚现代社会就业不仅仅看分数 ,可能该校本来教学水平就不行,又由于这几年就业压力大,导致就业铝比以前更低,我们从文中并不能看出十五年前该校就业铝很高,所以只有分数应行就业铝的结论不正确。
应该把这个放在第一点。其他还找得不错。加油

还想请教一下,  可以用就业率来说吗? 在argu中只是说就业没有A的好, 但不一定是真的就业率不好吧, 他只和A比较了一下啊
