Argument:
2 The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."
In this letter, a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres advocates all the homeowners to adopt a set of restrictions on the landscaping of the community’s yards as well as the exterior color of homes. Because the average property values of Brookville that has adopted the restrictions seven years ago have tripled. Any close inspection will reveal how serious fallacies of causal-relation and analogue the committee has made and how ridiculous the recommendation is.
In the first place, there is an obvious fallacy of causal-relation in the argument. The increase of Brookville’s average property values is not inevitably caused by the adoption of the set of restrictions. It is entirely impossible that some other factors increase the average property values. For example, maybe the environment of Brookville which is very suitable for living attract more and more people want to buy house in this area. The arguer should assure what reason cause the value increase on earth. After all, there is seven years between the adoption of restrictions and the price has triple, why could the average property values keep increasing during so long time.
In the second place, the committee fails to consider possible differences between the situation of Brookville and that of Deerhaven Acres. Maybe the landscaping of the community’s yard and the exterior color of homes are appreciated by the homebuyers of Brookville very much while the potential homebuyers of Derhaven Acres does not like the conformable landscaping and exterior color. For this matter, the average property values are prone to decrease rather than increase by adopting these restrictions. So the arguer can not make any suggestion before deeply investigating the taste of the potential homebuyers.
In a sum, to make the recommendation raised by the committee of Deerhaven Acres persuasive, the arguer should first provide more detail evident to show that it is the adoption of restrictions that rise the Brookville’s property values. In addition, a survey will be useful to indicate what kind of houses are more favorable by the potential buyers of Derhaven Acres. Then the committee should make decisions on their own situation.
